Impact of Severe to Profound Deafness on Cognitive Functions in Middle-aged Adults

A mild cognitive impairment was observed in 50% of cochlear implant candidates aged 65 years and over, compared to 5-19% in general population. No studies analysed cognition in patients younger than 65 years. The aim of our study was to compare cognitive function between patients with severe and profound hearing loss and patients with normal hearing in patients aged 45 to 64 years.

Cochlear Implantation in Children With Asymmetric Hearing Loss or Single-Sided Deafness Clinical Trial

This is a two-phase study that compares performance growth pre-implant with current hearing aid (HA) technology versus post-implant with a cochlear implant (CI) in children with either asymmetric hearing loss (AHL) or single-sided deafness (SSD). Post-implant performance with a CI alone is expected to outperform pre-implant performance with a HA. The study also evaluates the effectiveness of bimodal hearing defined as a CI in the poor ear and a HA in the better ear for AHL or a CI in the poor ear and normal hearing in the better ear for SSD compared to pre-implant performance. The study examines factors contributing to CI outcomes.

Validity of the French Version of Deafness Questionnaires for Children and Adolescents

The care of deafness in children is difficult and the relevance of interventions is difficult to evaluate based on audiometric measurements alone. Generic pediatric quality of life tools have been validated and used, among other things, to assess the quality of life of children with deafness. However, these non-specific tools do not make it possible to precisely target which factors and interventions are the most important for the quality of life in this population. Achieving a score to monitor the quality of life objectively over time is fundamental to verify the effectiveness of interventions, and assess the impact on the child. There is currently no validated test in French for any of these uses and populations. The objective of the study is to adapt the questionnaires "PEACH", "SSQ child (SSQ-C)" and "SSQ parents (SSQ-P)" to the French child, and statistically measure their internal and external validity by comparing them to a control group. The validation of these three tests (PEACH, SSQ-P, SSQ-C) would make it possible to assess the hearing performance and quality of life of almost the entire pediatric population, for use in both clinical and academic practice.

Degenerative Consequences of Congenital Deafness

In this study, the investigators will study one of the basic biophysical properties of the auditory nerve, charge integration, behaviorally (detection threshold versus phase duration functions). The investigators will compare charge integration in two subject groups: congenitally deafened and deafened at a later age in life. The investigators will then examine if behaviorally estimated neural excitation patterns differ between short phase duration and long phase duration stimulation. Lastly, The investigators will measure if speech recognition improves with using long phase duration stimulation, relative to using the standard default short phase duration stimulation. The primary endpoint of the study is speech recognition, and the secondary endpoints are the steepness of the detection threshold versus phase duration functions, and the width of psychophysically estimated neural excitation.

Localization and Mismatch Negativity in Subjects With Single-sided Deafness Ads Subjects With Unilateral Cochlear Implant

This descriptive and observational research project aims to characterize MMN as a neuronal marker of localization deficit in single-sided deafened subjects and subjects with bilateral profound deafness treated by a cochlear implant (CI). It includes several electro-physiological and psychoacoustic assessments performed on subjects with single-sided deafness and cochlear implanted subjects, with normal-hearing subjects as control: - Evaluation of the characteristics of the MMN involved in sound localization by EEG. - Evaluation of the spatial localization abilities for a sound source presented in the open field. - Assessment of performance for speech recognition in noise. These evaluations are performed in subjects with symmetrical hearing, in a natural binaural condition and a monaural condition (with a plugged ear), in subjects with single-sided deafness and in subjects with unilateral CI

Recent studies have reported successful reduction of tinnitus after cochlear implantation (CI) in most CI users, but the mechanisms of reduction and the amount of improvement is not fully understood. Especially, the relative role of peripheral and central auditory pathways is not clearly known. This study assessed the effect of CI electrical stimulation on tinnitus in subjects with unilateral tinnitus related to a single-sided deafness (SSD), and relative contributions of peripheral and central auditory pathways in tinnitus reduction.
