Filter by:This study is to test whether a chlorine dioxide gas-generating device, which releases a low concentration gas of chlorine dioxide in a sustained manner, can protect against respiratory infections in elderly individuals living in nursing homes. Such a device is used as a deodorant for normal domestic purposes. The investigators reasoned that the antiviral and antibacterial properties of chlorine dioxide might lead to a lowering in the incidence of respiratory infectious diseases. The study is designed as a randomized placebo-controlled double-blind crossover multicentre trial involving approximately 1500 subjects.
Diarrheal diseases are a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally in children less than 5 years of age. Prolonged diarrhea, recurrent infections and growth failure in developing countries are usually a consequence of micronutrient deficiencies including zinc. The primary aims of the proposed study are to evaluate the effect of the use of multiple micronutrient sprinkles including zinc on compliance of supplement use and the incidence of recurrent diarrheal and respiratory illnesses. The proposed study will be conducted at the Fima Lifshitz Metabolic Research Center, Department of Pediatrics, Universidade Federal Da Bahia, Salvador-Bahia, Brazil over a period of 18 months. This is a double-blind placebo-controlled trial involving the use of 2 types of micronutrient sprinkles in a group of 120 children who attend a day care center in Salvador, Bahia. They will be randomized into 2 groups of 60 children each. The intervention group will receive sprinkles containing zinc while the control group will receive micronutrient sprinkles without zinc. The primary outcome variables of interest are zinc status, stool zinc losses and diarrhea duration. Both groups of infants will be monitored at monthly intervals for an initial duration of 180 days for zinc status, diarrhea episodes, respiratory illness and growth. This study will allow for the establishment of a cohort of children who will be monitored in a micronutrient supplementation trial using sprinkles.
The investigators are aiming to learn more about respiratory infections in young children in the community. To prepare for a larger project, the investigators are conducting this study to get information about the best way to collect and transport respiratory specimens from young children. The investigators would like to test whether parents are more likely to collect a simple respiratory specimen themselves during a child's illness, compared to the likelihood of specimen collection when a home visit is made by a health care worker. Further, the investigators want to compare the likelihood a virus will be identified in both groups.
Parents with children aged 3-11 will participate in this study. About 500 children will take part in the study. We expect about half of those children will develop symptoms of a respiratory infection. Active participation in this study will last 14 days after a parent reports symptoms of a respiratory infection in a participant. Those children who do meet the study criteria of symptoms will then be randomly placed (like a flip of a coin) into one of 2 groups to take either COLD-FX® or placebo for 3 days. A placebo will look exactly like COLD-FX® but contains no active ingredients. The participant has an equal chance of being placed in either of the above groups. The study is double-blind, so neither the participant nor the study staff will know which study group the participant was placed in until the study is completed. If this information is needed in an emergency at any time throughout the study, it is quickly available from the sponsor. Participation in the study will be for 14 days after symptoms of a respiratory infection are reported to study staff. Your child will take the study product for 3 days, you will complete a daily diary, receive 4 phone calls and be seen for a final study visit to review the diary and complete a final health check of your child.
The purpose of this study is to conduct a Randomized Control Trial (RCT) in a developing country setting in order to evaluate the role of alcohol based hand sanitizers (ABHS) in preventing the transmission of infectious diseases in areas where water is a scarce resource. The investigators want to find out if the use of ABHS reduces the incidence of two leading causes of morbidity and mortality in children under 5 years of age in the developing world: acute diarrheal disease (ADD) and acute respiratory infections (ARI).
The purpose of this study is to determine if a patient education in acute condition about the intake of oral solution antibiotic in children under 6 year-old are effective to improve the satisfaction about the therapeutic education, the knowledge about antibiotics among the patients' families and thereby decrease the misuses of antibiotics.

The purpose of the study is to determine whether the effect of treating Candida spp. isolated in the respiratory tract secretions of patients with a clinical suspicion of ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) on clinical outcomes will be feasible and supported by biomarker data obtained.
The aim of the study is to see if lozenges containing a low dose of interferon-alpha can prevent and/or reduce the severity of colds and flu. Starting about 1 month before the expected start of the winter colds and flu season in Perth, Australia, healthy volunteers will allow a lozenge containing interferon, or a lozenge containing no medicine (a placebo), to dissolve in their mouth once a day for 16 weeks. Blood tests at the start and end of treatment will determine whether interferon was able to prevent infections with cold/flu viruses. Once a week, volunteers will complete a survey about their cold/flu symptoms, medications taken, days of work missed, etc. to see if interferon was able to make their winter colds and flu less severe.
Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) are the most common illnesses in primary medical services but there is no established cure for these conditions in Western medicine. In Hong Kong, many patients use Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) for the treatment of URTIs but there is little research evidence on their effectiveness or side effects. The aim of this study is to test whether two commonly used Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) formulae guided by Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) diagnosis will significantly increase recovery rate, and reduce the duration and/or severity of symptoms, and improve the quality of life of patients with URTIs in primary care. If a patient consents to take part in the study and is found eligible, he/she will be invited by the consulting doctor, and then be assessed by a registered Chinese medicine practitioner for whether the illness satisfies the TCM diagnosis of the two major TCM types of URTIs: Group A (Wind-cold syndrome) and Group B (Wind-heat syndrome). Subjects in Group A (Wind-cold syndrome) will be randomised to receive the Jing Fan Bai Du san or placebo. Subjects in Group B (Wind-heat syndrome) will be randomised to receive Ying Qiao san or placebo. Both group A and B treatments and placebo will be given in sachets of granules that are identical in appearance. Neither the Chinese medicine practitioner, the recruiting doctors, nor patient know whether a subject is taking CHM or placebo. 328 subjects (164 in each diagnosis group) will be recruited from patients consulting the Ap Lei Chau Government General Outpatient clinic for URTIs. Each subject is required to return to the clinic for follow-up assessment by the Chinese medicine practitioner on day 7 post-treatment and all subjects will be contacted by telephone on Day 2, 3, 5, 9, 11, 13,15 and 20 after treatment to assess their symptoms and to find out if they have developed any side effects or adverse reactions. The main outcome measure is any difference in the proportion of subjects who have resolution of the URTI on Day 7 between the treatment and placebo groups. The secondary outcome measures are the reduction in the duration and severity of symptoms, quality of life during the illness and side effects. This study will provide scientific evidence to support or refute the effectiveness of two commonly used CHM formulae in the treatment of URTIs.
