Norway and other Western industrialized countries are facing major challenges in terms of preventable health problems, high work absence, largescale demographic changes and rising social inequalities in health. By applying an interdisciplinary research approach - integrating perspectives from psychology, sociology, medicine and economics, using multiple samples and complementary analytical strategies, this project addresses the need for effective means to meet these important challenges. The project will scientifically evaluate The 5 Ways to Wellbeing course (5Ways), a novel measure aiming to promote wellbeing and integration, health and work adherence. Subjective wellbeing is systematically and prospectively related to important individual and societal outcomes, including social connectedness and integration, innovation, productivity, work performance, healthy behaviours, health and longevity. Promotion of wellbeing may therefore contribute to address the urgent societal ailments of today. Intervention effects and cost effectiveness of the 5Ways will be examined in-depth in four real-life settings, using quantitative and qualitative methods. Specifically, we will investigate course impact on i) sickness absence for employees in work places with high sickness absence rates, ii) wellbeing, health and social participation among immigrants attending the municipalities? Introduction Programmes, and iii) wellbeing, health and work adherence among users of The Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV) and iv) clients in Healthy Life Centres. If effective, the course may be implemented nationwide and contribute to increase wellbeing and work participation and reduce immigrants? exclusion. Findings from the study may thus contribute to enable municipalities and workplaces to make better priorities for promoting work presence, reducing suffering and improving mastery and quality of life among their employees and inhabitants

Consequences of Respiratory Devices on Caregivers (CAP2)

The promoter of the study will conduct a monocentric cohort study that aim to evaluate the consequences of home respiratory devices on patient caregivers' quality of life. The investigators will examine the impact of home respiratory devices on quality of life in general, sleep quality, anxiety and humour depending on equipment type (Non-invasive ventilation (NIV), continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT)) for patients and partners. The investigators will assess the correlation between patient and caregiver's answers. The investigators will assess the correlation between couple's quality of life and adherence to treatment. To do this, the investigators will use four quality of life questionnaires and the investigators will collect demographic data, medical data and usage report from the equipment.

A Series of N-of-1 Trials of Traditional Chinese Medicine Based on Bayesian Method

The guiding role of parallel randomized controlled trials in clinical practice is limited due to the insufficiency of individual information. Our previous studies showed that Single case randomized controlled trials (referred to as N-of-1 trials) could reflect the individualized characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome differentiation with good feasibility, but the sensitivity was low. This study aims to compare the efficacy of treatment based on syndrome differentiation with controlled decoctions (placebo, and the method of strengthening the body resistance and removing phlegm) among patients with stable bronchiectasis through a series of N-of-1 trials (single-patient, double-blind, randomized, multiple crossover design), with the 7 point-likert scale of the most concerned symptoms as the main outcome. Hierarchical Bayesian statistical methods and some parameters and variables will be introduced, such as TCM syndrome type, potential residue effect of TCM, etc. The sensitivity and applicability of various mathematical models (Hierarchical Bayesian, paired t-test and Meta-analysis) for N-of-1 trials of TCM will be tested, for the purpose of improving the sensitivity and applicability of N-of-1 trials of TCM both on individual and group levels.

ABC - A Post Intensive Care Anaemia Management Trial

On discharge from intensive care (ICU) patients are often severely anaemic (have a low level of haemoglobin (Hb) in their red blood cells (RBC)). Anaemia can persist for many months making patients feel tired and fatigued. Regaining pre-illness health and energy levels can take a long time. The ABC Post Intensive Care Trial will be the first trial to investigate if an anaemic ICU patient's health can be improved by treating with RBC transfusions following ICU discharge. We will compare the current approach as per national guidelines (restrictive transfusion), with a more active transfusion regime to correct anaemia from ICU discharge to hospital discharge. The trial will take place in acute hospitals throughout the UK where patients are discharged after a period of time in ICU. Patients discharged, or ready for discharge from ICU will be approached to consider participation in the trial. Once Hb level drops below 94g/L they would become eligible for inclusion (subject to meeting inclusion/exclusion criteria). The main indication for being excluded from participating in the trial is that transfusions are contraindicated (not appropriate for the patient) or they have an objection to blood transfusions. Group allocation will be randomly assigned at ICU discharge. We will explore which patients benefit most from transfusions and those who gain no benefit. Patients will have their Hb level checked at least weekly whilst in hospital and based on the result will have RBC transfusions as required according to the treatment regime they were randomised to. Part of the research is based on self-reported quality of life so participants will be asked to complete a number of questionnaires at set time-points from randomisation to 6 months post randomisation. Each participant will be actively on trial for approximately 6 months. The five-year follow will be done using routinely collected data from national databases.

Impact on Quality of Life From Multi-modality Lung Cancer

The investigators aim to explore how lung cancer patients and their family carers are affected by different types of cancer treatment. The investigators are focusing on a particular type of lung cancer called Stage III N2. N2 means the cancer has spread just outside the lung to the lymph nodes. There are two main treatments available in the UK for this type of lung cancer: 1. surgery PLUS chemo radiotherapy or chemotherapy 2. radiotherapy PLUS chemotherapy Patients live for a similar length of time with either treatment option so it is difficult for patients and health professionals to know which treatment to choose. It is important to understand the impact of the treatment on patients in their daily lives. Patients will be allocated at random to receive one of the two treatments options. Patients and carers will complete questionnaires and take part in interviews. The results of this study will help the investigators decide if a larger study should be conducted in the future.
