Magnesium Oral Supplementation to Reduce Pain Inpatients With Severe Peripheral Arterial Occlusive Disease

Magnesium exerts analgesic effects in several animal pain models and in patients affected by acute postoperative pain and chronic pain of neuropathic origin. There is no evidence that magnesium can modulate pain in patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD). We describe the protocol of a single-center randomized double-blind clinical trial aimed at assessing the efficacy of oral magnesium supplementation in controlling severe pain in patients with advanced PAOD.

Evaluation of the Safety of Compressive Socks to Treat Venous Insufficiency in Patients With Peripheral Arterial Disease

Elastic compression stockings are recommended in the treatment venous insufficiency. Degressive compressive stockings have been used for many decades and are characterized by a high pressure applied at the ankle and a decreasing pressure from the ankle to the knee. Progressive compressive stockings were developed to have a maximal pressure at the calf. This concept is based on the calf pump role in the venous return. Patients with PAD (Peripheral Arterial Disease) often suffer from venous insufficiency. But elastic compression stockings are strictly contraindicated for patients with PAD because highest pressures on ankle could slow down the superficial microcirculation. On patients with PAD and venous insufficiency, the progressive compressive stockings could be well indicated. Strongest pressure at the calf should increase the pump effect and the muscle mechanical efficiency during the walk without deleterious effect.

Women's Health Initiative Strong and Healthy Study

The WHISH trial applies state-of-the science behavioral principles and currently available technologies to deliver a physical activity intervention without face-to-face contact to ~25,000 older U.S. women expected to consent. It includes the National Institute of Aging (NIA) Go4Life® Exercise & Physical Activity materials 3 and WHISH developed targeted materials based on Go4Life® to provide inspirational tips and recommendations about how to achieve nationally recommended levels of PA and overcome barriers to exercise, with a means for self-monitoring and setting personal goals. The intervention builds upon evidence-based behavioral science principles and intervention components that have proven to be effective in increasing PA in older women, with innovative adaptive approaches to tailoring the delivery to meet individual (personal) needs.
