Filter by:The purpose of the research study is to determine the effects of two different kinds of speech treatment on certain behaviors in individuals with parkinson's disease. These behaviors include speech, voice, related communication behaviors, swallowing and body movement.
Although family caregivers perform an incredibly valuable service for their relatives and the formal health care system, they do so at a considerable cost to themselves both emotionally and physically. Effective stress management techniques can: 1) help to decrease the caregivers' feelings of burden and stress; 2) improve the emotional and physical health of caregivers; and 3) empower caregivers to gain control of their lives.
The goal of this study is to investigate neurophysiologic tests that have the potential of serving as screening tools for Parkinson's disease. These neurophysiologic tests will be administered to individuals with Parkinson's disease and parkinsonian syndrome and validated against a healthy control population. Specifically, this study will look at changes in motor function, cognitive function, handwriting, speech, and olfactory function in individuals with Parkinson's disease, individuals at risk for Parkinson's disease and healthy controls.

The purpose of this study is to investigate genetic and environmental risk factors that increase susceptibility to the development of early-onset Parkinson's disease (developed at or before age 50).
Patients with Parkinson's Disease or Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), and symptoms of orthostatic hypotension, are eligible for the study. Each patient will have three weeks of conservative therapy, three weeks of therapy with fludrocortisone, and three weeks of therapy with domperidone. Autonomic testing, a symptom questionnaire, bedside blood pressure testing, and Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) will be performed after each intervention.
This is a database study. Medical records will be reviewed in order to document a new or pending diagnosis of Parkinson's disease and in order to learn more about the disease process. Other than the time that it takes to complete a medical record authorization form, no other human subject participation will be needed.
The CELC200A2401 study has been designed in order to evaluate the hypothesis that administering the combination carbidopa/levodopa/entacapone at the time that levodopa therapy is initiated results in a decrease in the risk of the development of motor complications for patients with Parkinson's disease.
