The study team is studying how increasing dietary fiber, specifically through adding potato starch to participant's diet, may impact the species of bacteria in participant's gut microbiome. The study team also wants to understand if adding potato starch to participant's diet helps these bacteria make more short chain fatty acids, a byproduct the team thinks may benefit participant's health.

Creating Welcoming Faith Communities for People With Serious Mental Illnesses

The goal of this intervention study is to test a behavioral intervention to increase inclusionary practices toward individuals with serious mental illness in faith communities. The main questions it aims to answer are: 1. To determine if the behavior-based intervention leads to an increase in inclusionary practices (e.g., conducting outreach with mental health agencies). 2. To determine if the behavior-based intervention is effective in increasing inclusive practices by members and leaders of faith communities. 3. To determine if the intervention leads to a greater understand of mental illness and a decrease in stigmatizing beliefs by congregation members. 4. To determine if the intervention results in individuals with serious mental illness and their family members reporting less discrimination and increased inclusion. Congregations will be asked to create an inclusion committee that will then work on developing systems and changing congregational practices to become more inclusive. All congregation members will be invited to a half-day training that will provide information on mental illness and inclusion, and will provide tips and strategies when they encounter situations or behaviors that are less familiar to them. All congregation members will be given the opportunity to participate in a survey about congregational practices.

Impact of Blood Phobia on Fainting Susceptibility

The primary purpose of this study is to characterize cardiovascular autonomic function to emotional stimuli (blood-injection-injury phobia [needle phobia]) during an orthostatic (upright) challenge in individuals with and without known needle phobia. It is well established that emotional stress can produce hypotensive (low blood pressure) reactions. Interestingly, these hypotensive reactions to venipuncture (even with minimal blood drawn), insulin injections, finger sticks for blood sugar monitoring, dental care, and vaccinations can affect up to a quarter of adults and appear to be uniquely associated with blood-injection-injury phobia rather than other phobias. These hypotensive reactions can ultimately lead to a vasovagal syncope (fainting) response, and lead to increased avoidance of medical and dental procedures as a result of this phobia. Ultimately, this has severe implications on public health and places additional strain on the Canadian healthcare system. Currently, there is limited understanding surrounding the initiation of this response. Additionally, a comprehensive profile of cardiovascular autonomic function during exposure to provoking stimuli during orthostatic stress has not been captured in the literature. We will test individuals with and without blood-injection-injury phobia using our standard approach while exposing them to emotional stimuli.

ALIGN: Aligning Medications With What Matters Most (Demonstration)

The goal of this clinical trial is to test the effectiveness of a pharmacist-led, primary care-based de-prescribing intervention for people living with dementia (PLWD) and the person's care partners. The intervention consists of the following strategies: 1) a de-prescribing educational brochure designed to activate the patient and care partner; 2) a single telehealth visit in which an embedded clinical pharmacist discusses the benefits and harms of the patient's medications with the patient and care partner in the context of the person's goals and preferences; and 3) pharmacist-PCP communication in which the pharmacist provides tailored de-prescribing recommendations designed to be useful and actionable for the PCP. The investigators will compare the intervention group with the waitlist control group to see if there is a difference in the primary outcome, the proportion of patients who deprescribe at least one medication by 3 months.

Long Non-coding RNAs and Their Role on Epigenome as Diagnostic Markers in Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia of T Cells.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a class of biomarkers of crescent interest in the hematologic and oncologic field. They do not encode proteins and can alter gene expression by acting on different steps of regulation, including DNA methylation and chromatin structure. Recent data identified recurrent somatic alterations in genes involved in DNA methylation and post-translational histone modifications in T-ALL, suggesting that epigenetic homeostasis is critically required in restraining tumor development in the T-cell lineage. Further, recent studies showed that the expression levels of specific lncRNAs correlate with the prognosis of patients with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia of T-cells (T-ALL). The objectives of this research project are to identify T-ALL-specific lncRNAs to be used as new diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers of disease and to explore their role on chromatin reorganization and transcriptional regulation that may lead to the onset and progression of T-ALL.

Tap Dance for Adults With Lower Limb Amputation

The goal of this study is to determine whether it is possible for people with lower limb amputation (LLA) to perform adapted tap dance, whether an adapted tap dance program would be enjoyable, and whether it may improve balance and balance confidence. There is a lack of research investigating therapeutic interventions for people with lower limb amputation (LLA). Tap dance encourages balance and novel movements of the limbs, while providing auditory feedback from the feet that provide information about the foot's contact with the ground, which may help prosthesis users gain a better ability to understand where their prosthetic foot is in space. As with most forms of dance, tap is usually taught and practiced in a group setting, which encourages community involvement. It has been shown to be safer than many forms of dance due to low impact forces. It also, as a genre, can incorporate canes, chairs and partner work, providing the ability to modify steps/moves when required so that they remain practical, achievable and safe for people with mobility limitations, while still enabling participation. It therefore may be an accessible dance medium to help improve balance, balance confidence, and build community for people with LLA. Participants will be asked to: - come to 1 hour dance classes, once per week, for 8 weeks. - do mobility tests before and after the program - complete questionnaires before, during and after the program. The total time for participation is approximately 8-10 weeks.
