Filter by:This study is being done to determine if an investigational cancer treatment called vorinostat combined with fractionated stereotactic radiation therapy (FSRT) is effective in treating recurrent high grade gliomas. The main goal of this research study is to determine the highest dose of vorinostat that can be given to patients with recurrent tumors. The study will also determine the potential side effects and safety of these treatment combinations. Vorinostat is a small molecule inhibitor of histone deacetylase (HDAC). HDAC inhibitors help unravel the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of the cancer cells and make them more susceptible to the treatment with radiation.
Name of the project:The application of cornea stem cells cultured on amniotic membrane in patients suffering from corneal stem cell insufficiency Purpose: To develop the technique of using ex vivo expansion of autologous limbal stem cell cultured on amniotic membrane for treatment of patients suffering from limbal stem cell insufficiency
The main objective of this study is to compare, using MRI measures with a specialized splint, the persistent rotatory laxity after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using single bundle and double bundle surgical techniques, between the seventh and eighth months after surgery, and for different degrees of knee flexion (0 °, 20 °, 40 °, 60 °).
The goal of this study it to rapidly create a brief registry of pregnant women who receive the H1N1 vaccine in Ontario, British Columbia, and Nova Scotia during the pandemic H1N1 2009/2010 influenza season.
This study is open to patients that have been diagnosed with non-squamous Stage III Non Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) and will have surgery to remove the tumor. The purpose of this study is to: - Test a combination of two chemotherapeutic drugs along with radiation therapy, when given prior to surgery and see what effects (good or bad) it has on someone with this type of cancer. Chemotherapeutic drugs selectively destroy diseased cancer cells and tissues. - Test the safety of different dose levels of radiation when given with each combination of chemotherapy; - Determine what side effects are associated with combining radiation with these two chemotherapy combinations.
Background: - One way tumors are able to grow is by forming new blood vessels that supply it with nutrients and oxygen. - Vandetanib (ZD6474) is an experimental drug that blocks certain proteins on the surface of tumor and blood vessel cells that are involved with the formation of new blood vessels. - Blocking these proteins may prevent the tumor cells or blood vessels from continuing to grow. Objectives: - To determine whether vandetanib can cause tumors to shrink or stabilize in patients with advanced kidney cancer. - To determine how vandetanib may work in people with kidney cancer and to develop tests that may be helpful in studying kidney cancer. Eligibility: -Patients 18 years of age or older with advanced clear cell kidney cancer whose disease has worsened after treatment with one or more of the following drugs: sunitinib, sorafenib, interleukin-2 and temsirolimus; or patients who have had to stop treatment with these drugs due to unacceptable side effects; or patients who are unable to receive standard treatment. Design: - Patients take a vandetanib pill once a day in 28-day cycles. - Patients are followed in the clinic every 2 weeks during the first month of treatment and then every 4 weeks for a physical examination, blood and urine tests, electrocardiogram and a review of any drug side effects. - Patients have imaging scans (computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)) about every 8 weeks to monitor tumor growth. MRI scans are also done to look at tumor blood flow when treatment begins, 24 hours after the first dose of treatment, and again about 4 and 8 weeks after starting treatment - Optional tumor biopsies (surgical removal of a sample of tumor tissue) may be done before starting vandetanib treatment and after 4 weeks of treatment to look for drug effects on the tumor.
The goal of this research study is to establish chimerism and avoid graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD) in patients with inherited metabolic disorders.
Moderate exercise is thought to be one of the best known means to improve how insulin works in people. Taking vitamin C and vitamin E is also thought to have the same effect. This study is being done to see if taking vitamin C and vitamin E improves or hinders how insulin works when people do not exercise and when they do exercise.
Chronic fatigue (CF) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are disabling disorders that may be induced or aggravated by underlying sleep disturbances. The relationship between sleep quality and fatigue is still not fully elucidated. To evaluate the effect of improved sleep quality on fatigue, a randomized controlled and cross-over trial with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) is carried out in patients who present with a primary complaint of chronic disabling fatigue and who are found to have an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) >= 15 on polysomnography (PSG). The aim of this study is to address the issue of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure-responsiveness regarding fatigue as a presenting symptom in CF and CFS patient with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), in the absence of underlying medical or psychiatric illness. The answer to this question may shed further light on the enigmatic relationship between sleep and fatigue. We also want to investigate the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure responsiveness regarding sleepiness and general health in the same target population. Zero-hypothesis: there is no effect.
This phase II trial studies the impact of a presurgical endocrine therapy, consisting of goserelin with letrozole or anastrozole on the treatment of premenopausal patients with stage II-III estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative breast cancer. Endocrine therapy reduces the amount of estrogen in the body. E+ breast cancer require estrogen, so lower levels of estrogen may slow or stop cell growth. Giving goserelin together with letrozole or anastrozole before surgery may enhance the effectiveness of, or eliminate the need for, chemotherapy
