Iron Infusion Into a Vein Compared to Iron Tablet Taken by Mouth for Treating Iron Deficiency Anemia in Pregnancy (IVON)

Background: Anaemia in pregnancy is a public health burden with high incidence in Africa. Currently high dose oral iron is recommended for treatment of mild to moderate anaemia and blood transfusion for severe anaemia. The high dose oral iron is often poorly tolerated and associated with several side effects. Various parenteral iron preparations are now available for treatment of iron deficiency anaemia (IDA). The earliest of these, iron dextran is not commonly used because of its potential to cause anaphylactic reactions. Newer preparations have been found to be safer and their use for treatment of IDA is currently being evaluated. Objective: This study sought out to compare the effectiveness of intravenous ferric carboxymaltose (intervention) versus oral ferrous sulphate (control) for treating IDA in pregnancy and to compare the tolerability, safety and the cost-effectiveness of intravenous versus oral iron among pregnant Nigerian women with moderate and severe IDA at 20-32 weeks' gestation. Methodology: This study will be a hybrid Type 1 effectiveness-implementation design. 1056 eligible and consenting pregnant women with anaemia at 20 - 32 weeks gestation will be recruited. They will be randomized into either of 2 groups. Group A will have intravenous ferric carboxymaltose 20mg/kg to a maximum of 1000mg in 200mls of normal saline infusion over 15 - 20 minutes at enrolment. Group B will have oral ferrous sulphate 200mg (65mg elemental iron) thrice daily from enrolment till delivery. They will be followed up through delivery and until 6 weeks post partum. Their haemoglobin concentration, full blood count, serum ferritin and serum transferrin will be assayed at specific intervals using standard laboratory techniques. Depression will be assessed at each visit using Edinburg Postnatal Depression Scale. Cost effectiveness analysis will also be done at each visit. The primary outcome measure will be incidence of maternal anaemia and rise in haemoglobin level. Secondary outcome measures will include safety and tolerability of trial drugs, severe maternal events, incidence of infant low birth weight and incidence of depression. Statistical analysis will be done using STATA version 16.0 statistical software (STATACorp, Texas, USA).

Effect of Multifocal Intraocular Lens on Contrast Sensitivity in Primary Angle-Closure Patients

This prospective study included patients with primary angle-closure (PAC or primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) and visually significant cataract. Phacoemulsification with multifocal intraocular lens (MIOL) or monofocal IOL (mIOL) (patient preference) was performed. Collected data included best-corrected distant visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and contrast sensitivity (CS) measured at spatial frequency 1.5, 3.0, 6.0, 12.0, and 18.0 cycles per degree (CPD) preoperatively, and at 2-6 months postoperatively. Preoperative and postoperative parameters were compared to evaluate the effect of MIOL on CS in eyes with PAC or PACG.

ALT-801 DDI Study in Healthy Volunteers

This is a Phase 1, open-label, drug-drug interaction (DDI) study of ALT-801 under steady state conditions on concomitantly administered medications in healthy subjects. The study will evaluate the effect of ALT-801 on the pharmacokinetics (PK) of metformin, warfarin, atorvastatin, digoxin, and the combined oral contraceptive (OC) ethinylestradiol/levonorgestrel. The study will be conducted in 3 parts, as described below. Each part will have 2 periods in a fixed sequence, where the first period is without ALT-801 administration and the second is with ALT-801 at steady state.

The study compares two medicines for children with a low level of hormone to grow: somapacitan (a new medicine) given once a week and Norditropin® (a medicine doctors can already prescribe) given once a day. Researchers will test somapacitan to see how well it works, compared to the standard treatment with Norditropin®. The participants will either get Norditropin® once every day or somapacitan once every week - which treatment the participant gets is decided by chance. The participant and the study doctor will know which treatment the participant gets. The study includes a 52 week treatment period and a minimum of 30 days follow up period.

Aflibercept as Adjunctive Treatment for Filtration Surgery in Neovascular Glaucoma

Purpose: To investigate intravitreal aflibercept (IVA) injection as an adjunctive treatment to trabeculectomy with mitomycin C (TMC) and panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) for neovascular glaucoma (NVG). Setting: Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand Study design: Prospective interventional case series Methods: PRP and IVA (2 mg/0.05 ml) injection were given, and TMC was performed within 2 weeks after IVA. Additional PRP, laser suture lysis, subconjunctival 5-fluorouracil injection, and bleb needling were performed after TMC if indicated. Best-collected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), surgical complications, and number of anti-glaucoma medications were collected.
