Effect of Therapeutic Exercise on the Activation of the Neck Extensors in People With Chronic Neck Pain

The primary aim of this study therefore is to investigate the effects on pain and disability of an emphasized exercise program targeting the deep neck extensor semispinalis cervicis and a general exercise program for all neck extensor muscles in patients with chronic neck pain. As a secondary aim , pain intensity (VAS), cervical ROM, pressure pain threshold (PPT), cervical and thoracic posture and self-perceived benefit of treatment (GROC) were measured. The investigators hypothesized that both exercise programs would have similar effects on pain alleviation and pain related disability, but that the emphasized exercise program for the deep semispinalis cervicis would improve its activation more compared to the general exercise program. The results of this study will be relevant for designing effective rehabilitation/training programs for patients with chronic neck pain.

The Effect of Cervical Taping on Neck Pain and Kinematics in Patients With Chronic Neck Pain

Objective: This study examined the effects of elastic tape applied to the neck on patients experiencing chronic neck pain. Background: Neck pain is often persistent or recurrent. Various treatments have been described, including exercises and manual therapy. Taping is commonly used clinically in the management of neck pain, however research in this field is sparse. Methods: Elastic tape was applied over the posterior cervical extensor muscles from insertion to origin on patients experiencing chronic neck pain. Patients were assessed pre-taping, immediately post-taping, and one week post-taping and did not receive additional physiotherapy during the study. Subjective measures included the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain intensity, the Neck Disability Index (NDI) to determine the level of disability in daily living, and the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK) to assess fear of movement or re-injury. Objective outcome measures included cervical range of motion, velocity, smoothness, and accuracy of cervical motion. These kinematic measures were collected using a customised virtual reality system designed to evaluate neck motion disorders.

Specific Neck Rehabilitation for Unilateral Headache and Neck Pain, and Structural and Functional Changes in the Brain

In part 1 of the project clinical effect of specific neck rehabilitation for unilateral headache and neck pain (also termed cervicogenic headache) will be compared with standard primary health care. The researchers will further study whether fear avoidance beliefs and self-efficacy predict long term neck function and headache frequency superior to active range of neck movement. Part 2 will investigate whether patients with cervicogenic headache have structural changes in cerebral grey and white matter and in connectivity of the resting state state network, and whether these are reversed after effective neck rehabilitation and correlate to symptom severity and degree of disability.
