Filter by:The purpose of this study is to compare two different treatment protocols for treating nausea and vomiting in patients who have undergone bone marrow transplant. Patients will be assigned to one of two treatment groups. The first group will recieve ondansetron (Zofran) tablets combined with a medicine called dexamethasone given IV. Both of these drugs are commercially available. Patients in the second treatment consists of the first two drugs, plus a newly approved drug known as aprepitant (MK-869, Emend). This combination will be the treatment being tested. The combination is approved by the FDA for chemotherapy regimens known to cause a lot of nausea and vomiting. It significantly decreases the delayed (more than 24 hours after therapy) nausea and vomiting seen with these regimens.
Nausea and vomiting is a common complaint in the emergency department. Treatment is important for many reasons. In addition to patient comfort, there are adverse effects secondary to vomiting such as dehydration, metabolic alkalosis, Mallory-Weiss tears, and aspiration. Two mediations common used for nausea in ED patients include Ondanesetron and Metoclopramide.

RATIONALE: Learning how often patients experience nausea and vomiting after receiving anti-vomiting medicine and chemotherapy for colorectal cancer may help doctors plan better treatment and improve patients' quality of life. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying delayed nausea and vomiting in patients with colorectal cancer receiving standard anti-vomiting medicine during the first course of chemotherapy.
Retrospectively review the charts of all children who had heart rate variability, deep breathing test, valsalva maneuver, tilt table test, thermoregulatory sweat testing, quantitative sudomotor axon reflex test (QSART) completed and were cared for at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.
The investigators are conducting this study to find out if intravenous (injected through the vein) infusion of lidocaine and ketamine administered with general anesthesia is as effective as a paravertebral block in lessening pain after surgery and that both of these techniques are superior to general anesthesia alone in reducing pain immediately after surgery and in the long-term.
