The Acute Effect of a Mobilization With Movement Technique to Improve Internal Rotation of the Shoulder

For many years researchers have been documented that the shoulder of the throwing athlete acquires a increase in external rotation of the dominant limb compared to the contralateral side.This fact is followed with a loss of the internal rotation of the shoulder, which is related with a higher rate of injuries in this joint and it´s known as Glenohumeral Internal Rotation Deficit (GIRD). Among the approaches for this condition the literature is inconclusive due to the low methodological quality of clinical trials made,however, the manual therapy has been used with success to relief the pain and restore the range of motion. The purpose of this study is to analyse the effectiveness of a mobilization with movement technique to improve the internal rotation of the shoulder in throwing athletes with GIRD. It will be a randomized controlled trial with the CONSORT bases with 40 participants that will be divided into two groups: - Control group that will be submitted for an evaluation of shoulder range of motion (internal/external rotation)of both limbs, upper limb active movements to warm-up (five minutes), posterior capsule stretching (Cross-body stretch for 3 sets of 30 seconds) and revaluation immediately post-intervention and four weeks post-intervention. - Mobilization group that will be submitted for an evaluation of shoulder range of motion (internal/external rotation)of both limbs, upper limb active movements to warm-up(five minutes), posterior capsule stretching (Cross-body stretch for 3 sets of 30 seconds) plus a mobilization with movement technique to improve internal rotation of the dominant shoulder (three sets of 10 repetitions)and revaluation immediately post-intervention and four weeks post-intervention. To evaluate the range of movement it will be use a standard goniometer with an attached customizes bubble inclinometer to ensure proper perpendicular alignment of the goniometer to the ground. The investigators hypothesis is that both group will have improvements in the internal rotation of the dominant shoulder, however, the mobilization group will have a statistically significant difference compared to control group immediately post-intervention. Four weeks post-intervention this difference will equalize, because of the only intervention applied. Results will be expressed as hazard ratios (HR) with their respective confidence intervals at 95% and adopting α = 0.05. All analyzes will be performed by SPSS version 17.0

During recent years elastic resistance training has become increasingly popular for preventing or relieving neck/shoulder/arm pain among sedentary employees. While most research studies documenting positive effects of such interventions have used training instructors, most training in practice does not use an instructor but rather depends on information from other sources such as the internet. Here the investigators examine - in a outcome assessor blinded randomized controlled trial - the effect of 2 weeks elastic resistance training for the neck/shoulder/arm with personal versus video instruction on technical execution.

Biomechanics of Gait Pattern Adaptation in Patients After Total Knee Arthroplasty

This study aimed to discover the biomechanics of gait pattern adaptation in patients after a total knee replacement. The first hypothesis of the project was that center-of-pressure manipulation at the foot during dynamic loading is capable of changing the forces, torques and muscle activation patterns of the lower limb. The second hypothesis of the project was that patient-specific center-of-pressure manipulation at the foot combined with repetitive perturbation training over time will improve neuromuscular function, barefoot gait patterns, muscle activation patterns, pain, quality of life and energy consumption in patients after a total knee replacement.

Interdisciplinary Intervention Versus Brief Intervention for Patients With Musculoskeletal Pain

Musculoskeletal pain is very common in the normal population, and the reason for about 50 % of the long term sickness absence in Norway. Most of these patients have common, but troublesome subjective health complaints where pathological findings are absent or substantially less than expected compared to the reported intensity of the complaints. Psychosocial factors are important in the development of chronic complaints. In a large meta-analysis job satisfaction was found to be associated with mental health and subjective physical health. Individual factors are also important. Uncertainty related to the understanding of pain mechanisms, treatment strategies and management contribute to the problem. Among patients sicklisted for musculoskeletal complaints, low back pain is the largest diagnose group. Most of these patients also have many other complaints. Previous studies have shown that for low back pain patients a brief intervention at a spine clinic with examination, information, reassurance, and encouragement to engage in physical activity as normal as possible, had significant effect in reducing sick leave. Other studies have shown that multidisciplinary rehabilitation for chronic low back pain has effect on sick leave. A Danish study from Arbeidsmiljøinstituttet report that interdisciplinary treatment for patients sicklisted for musculoskeletal complaints, had effect on socio-economic costs, pain, and function. A treatment team consisting of various professionals is expensive, and in this study we will compare the simple, standardized brief intervention model with the more resource demanding interdisciplinary treatment for patients sicklisted for musculoskeletal complaints. Research question / hypothesis: An interdisciplinary treatment model for musculoskeletal complaints - is it beneficial for reducing sickness absence?

Effect of Kettlebell Training on Musculoskeletal and Cardiovascular Health

Neck/shoulder and back pain is quite common among employees in sedentary occupations. Furthermore, many have a low level of fitness. Strength training with dumbbells has been shown to alleviate neck/shoulder pain, but many people prefer to also have alternative training options. Empirically, kettlebell training works the neck/shoulder/back while at the same time training the cardiovascular system. This type of training has not previously been tested in a randomized controlled trial. The aim of this study is to test the effect of kettlebell training on musculoskeletal pain, fitness, and muscle strength.
