Filter by:The existence of the brachial plexus sheath (BPS) and its septae and compartments has been a subject of debate and controversy. Numerous cadaver studies indicate that BPS is present while other researchers based on limited clinical data suggest none. Nevertheless, cumulative evidence over the last six decades indicate that it is multi-layered, fibrous and a web-like connective tissue that is derived from the deep cervical fascia and fused with the deep fascia of the arm The BPS completely envelopes that neurovascular bundle and filed with loose connective tissue and fat. It is a multi-compartment structure in the axilla with each nerve having a separate compartment, that communicate with each other. Some studies suggested that the septae affect the spread of local anesthetic during an axillary or infraclavicular brachial plexus block, while some suggest the opposite. With the use of ultrasound imaging, researchers found the presence of this connective tissue septum within the BPS at the costoclavicular space and infraclavicular fossa. The septum is visualized as a linear hyperechoic band on ultrasound imaging and when present appears to reduce the spread of the drugs during brachial plexus block. Yet the anatomy is poorly seen with the previous generation of ultrasound imaging. The aim of this study is to define the connective tissue (fascial) layers that surround the brachial plexus and its septum at the infraclavicular fossa by reviewing our archived high definition ultrasound images of 100 patients who had successfully undergone the ultrasound guided brachial plexus block over a 5 year period (2013 to 2018).
Epidemiology, a word derived from the Greek epi (on) demos (people), is a scientific discipline in the area of medicine that studies the distribution, frequency and determining factors of chemical diseases in defined human populations. It is the method of problem solving research used by epidemiologists, scientists, statisticians, doctors, and other health professionals to get to the root of health problems in a community. Beyond the important role of descriptive epidemiology in generating etiological hypotheses, it also provides a description of the frequency and / or patterns of disease occurrence at the individual or social level. In the field of medicine and physiotherapy, epidemiological studies of musculoskeletal injuries acquire great relevance considering that they are the main cause of disability, increasing their prevalence year after year and carrying high economic and social costs. Worldwide, the Epidemiology of musculoskeletal pathologies has been reported in both the general population and specific populations. Despite the fact that kinesiology has been an established profession in Argentina since the 1940s, there is an evident lack of scientific information on this discipline. Currently, epidemiological reports of published musculoskeletal pathologies are scarce in our country. To our knowledge, the characteristics of the population of patients with musculoskeletal injuries who attend a private sports kinesiology office are not known. A study of these characteristics could help to better understand this population, improving routine clinical practice, as well as providing a database for the development of future scientific studies. For this reason, the main objective of this study is to describe the characteristics of the patients who come to an external kinesiology office at a private institution in Argentina. The secondary objective is to evaluate the relationship between the body mass index (BMI) and the affected body regions.
A randomized, controlled study with the pretest-posttest design was performed; 50 patients who were suffered from jaccoud's arthropathy and aged 30-50 years. Patients were randomly assigned into two groups: Group 1 (study group): received HILT, in addition to the routine physical therapy program. Group 2 (control group): received routine physical therapy program. All treatment interventions were applied at a frequency of three sessions per week for 8 weeks. The participants were recruited from the air forces hospital at the period from December 2018 and October 2019.
45 female participants with short hamstring syndrome were devided into one of the three groups; Group I: suboccipital muscle inhinbition plus passive hamstring stretch, group II: Slump stretch position plus Passive hamstring stretch, and group III: Passive stretch of hamstring muscle. Assessment methods were Straight leg raising test, forward flexion test and popliteal angle test, were measured at baseline, immediately after 1st treatment session then after 4 weeks of treatment.
This study aims to compare the efficacy of r-ESWT treatment with sham-ESWT on pain, walking speed, physical function, and isokinetic muscle strength in knee osteoarthritis.
This registry will assess clinical outcomes following the use of Cryopreserved Amniotic Membrane (CAM) for the treatment of orthopedic and various other conditions. This registry will collect outcomes data via a registry of up to 100 patients who have received treatment with CAM in the post-market setting. Patients will be enrolled from up to five healthcare centers.
Isotretinoin (ISO) has been used in the treatment of patients with severe acne vulgaris (AV) that is resistant to standard therapy with systemic antibiotics and topical agents, over the last few decades. There are various side effects of ISO in the skeletal system. This study investigate the relationship between ISO-induced musculoskeletal adverse effects and serum 25 hydroxy (OH) vitamin D levels in patients with acne vulgaris.
In this study; aimed to determine an individual-centered, effective physiotherapy method to reduce the negative impacts of the forward head posture on work-related functions and to increase body awareness and functionality among office workers. In addition, aimed to reduce the loss of work with measures to improve the quality and efficiency of work.
The "routine" pre-operative tests in healthy orthopaedic patients undergoing intermediate/ major surgery are not justified. In this study of 670 healthy orthopedic patients with 7610 preoperative tests, investigators found that surgical plan was influenced in <1% of patients. Surgeons should be sensitized to reconsider this practice particularly with limited resources.
This observational prospective study evaluates perioperative olfaction alterations, comprising changes in threshold value, discrimination and identification, which occur in spine patients. The single group is subjected to a preoperative and a postoperative assessment.
