The purpose of this study is to examine the efficacy of atomoxetine (ATX) treatment for the mild to moderate cognitive disturbances frequently experienced by women during the menopause transition. In addition, we seek to determine, using the Brown Attention Deficit Disorder Scale (BADDS), whether and to what degree peri- and early post-menopausal women experience cognitive disturbances which overlap with the impairments of executive function characteristic of adults with attention deficit disorder (ADHD).

The purpose of this study is to find out why women's arteries stiffen as they go through menopause, and how this is affected by estrogen loss. We believe that arteries stiffen with the loss of estrogen because of "oxidative stress," the production of molecules that can damage cells and tissues in the body, and because the arteries lose their ability to expand, or dilate.

Investigation of the Usefulness of Omega 3 Vitamins in the Relief of Hot Flashes in Menopausal Women.

Hot flashes can be a disturbing symptom of menopause. Prescription medications are commonly used for symptom relief. Several non-prescription therapies are under investigation. This study will examine the use of omega-3 (fish oil) supplements to see if it helps relieve hot flashes and therefore improve the quality of life. Study Hypotheses: Menopausal women who take Omega 3 vitamins(fish oils)will show improvement in the severity of their hot flashes.In addition women who take Omega 3 supplements will show improvement in their lipid profiles.

Dose-Finding Safety and Efficacy Trial of Org50081 (Esmirtazapine) in the Treatment of Vasomotor Symptoms (46101/P06459/MK-8265-012)

The most direct treatment of vasomotor symptions (hot flushes) may be by means of 5-HT2A receptor antagonist. Mirtazapine is a potent blocker of 5-HT2A receptors and was found to be effective in reducing the number and intensity of hot flushes in preliminary trials. Also several Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and other similar compounds have been investigated to manage hot flushes, confirming the role of the serotonergic system. In the present trial, the efficacy and safety of four different doses of esmirtazapine compared to placebo was investigated in women with moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms associated with the menopause. The primary study hypothesis was that esmirtazapine would show superior efficacy to placebo.

TDSM- Testosterone Dose Response in Surgically Menopausal Women

TDSM will study the physiology of testosterone in women ages 21-60 who have had surgical menopause (uterus and both ovaries removed). Testosterone is commonly thought of as a "male hormone" thus being that it is the male's primary hormone. Women produce testosterone in much smaller amounts and despite this, testosterone still plays a significant role. Fifty percent of a women's testosterone is made in her adrenal glands (glands that sit on top of the kidneys) and fifty percent is made in her ovaries. When a woman has her ovaries removed it is thought that her testosterone levels decrease rapidly and significantly. This study will be examining testosterone's role in sexual function, general well being, muscle performance, cognitive function, carbohydrate metabolism and muscle and fat distribution. The study is 14 months long with weekly to monthly visits. The subjects will be placed on the estrogen patch for the duration of the study. They will also be given weekly injections of testosterone or placebo for 6 months. During the testosterone treatment phase the women will be separated into 5 groups. The groups include a dose of testosterone that is very low, low, medium, high and placebo. A placebo looks and feels similar to testosterone; however it does not have testosterone in it. We use this to test if the subject is having a response to the testosterone itself or the thought of receiving testosterone. Neither the subject nor the investigators will know the dose until the end of the study.

Dry Eye in Women With Turner Syndrome and Women With Premature Ovarian Failure

Premature ovarian failure (POF) is known to be associated with an increased risk of ocular surface disease (dry eye), likely due to the reduction of both estrogens and androgens seen in this condition. From preliminary data, we suspect that women with Turners syndrome (45, XO), a genetic abnormality that affects sex hormone levels, are also at increased risk of ocular surface disease. Comparing POF and TS women may allow us to distinguish different mechanisms for ocular surface disease, due to the different etiologies of hormonal (estrogen and androgen) alterations posed by POF and TS.
