The Music, Sleep and Dementia Study

The specific aims of this studyare to examine the 1) feasibility; 2) acceptability; and 3) preliminary efficacy of a tailored music intervention in home-dwelling older adults with dementia suffering from sleep disruption. Sixty dyads (older adults with dementia and their caregivers) will be randomized to receive the tailored music intervention immediately or following a four week delay.

The Healthy Patterns Sleep Study

The Healthy Patterns Study intervention is a home-based activity intervention designed to improve symptoms of circadian rhythm disorders (CRD) and quality of life (QOL) in home-dwelling persons with dementia. We will use a randomized two-group parallel design of 200 people with dementia and their caregivers assigned to intervention or attention control groups.

The Effect of tES on a Cognitive Training

Noninvasive Brain Stimulation for Mild Cognitive Impairment

The goal of this study is to test the efficacy of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) as a treatment for Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: Group 1: Active Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC) rTMS; Group 2: Active Lateral Parietal Cortex (LPC) rTMS; and Group 3: Inactive rTMS (Placebo) control (evenly split between each coil location). Participation in the study takes approximately 7 ½ months-including a 2-to 4-week treatment phase (20 rTMS sessions) and a 6-month follow-up phase.

Mental Ability Challenge Study in Adults With and Without HIV

It is estimated that by 2016, nearly 50% of HIV-positive individuals in the US will be aged 50 or older, and up to 60% of those will experience some degree of cognitive impairment as they age. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the contribution of the neuronal cholinergic receptor system to the cognitive impairments seen in adults aging with chronic HIV Infection. By using anti-cholinergic challenge drugs to reversibly "stress" cognitive functioning, the investigators hope to understand whether the presence of the HIV virus in the brain impairs the neural system necessary for normal cognition, more than would be expected from normal cognitive aging.

Memory and Exercise Training Study in Older Adults With Subjective Memory Complaints

This pilot study is a first step in a rapidly growing area of clinical research to create the most effective means to combat age-related losses in cognitive function through preventive lifestyle strategies such as physical exercise and memory training. This study will develop innovative simultaneous exercise and memory training programs in non-demented volunteers with subjective memory complaints (controls or MCI). Our primary goal is to assess the cognitive impact of 4-week memory training programs done twice weekly: 1. during simultaneous aerobic exercise (SIM-AR-MET), 2. sequentially after aerobic exercise (SEQ-AR-MET), or 3. without aerobic exercise (replaced with sequential stretching and toning) (SEQ-ST-MET). The investigators will also measure potential metabolic (e.g., glucose, lipid panel) and molecular (serum BDNF) mediators of observed cognitive changes in a subset of participants (those at the UCLA CTRC/IPCN site).
