Gemcitabine and Oxaliplatin as Second-Line Therapy in Treating Patients With Stage III or Stage IV Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as gemcitabine and oxaliplatin, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Giving more than one drug (combination chemotherapy) may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well giving gemcitabine together with oxaliplatin works as second-line therapy in treating patients with stage III or stage IV non-small cell lung cancer.

Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill tumor cells. Giving more than one chemotherapy drug (combination chemotherapy) together with radiation therapy may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well giving cisplatin and pemetrexed disodium together with radiation therapy followed by docetaxel works in treating patients with stage III non-small cell lung cancer.

Study of Amiodarone Given Before Lung Surgery to Prevent Atrial Fibrillation After Lung Resection

Atrial fibrillation is a very common complication of pulmonary resection. Patients who develop atrial fibrillation require additional treatment and are more likely to stay in the hospital for longer period of time increasing the costs associated with the operation. We propose a randomized controlled trial to see if oral amiodarone given for one week before surgery can prevent atrial fibrillation after pulmonary resection. We plan to evaluate the incidence of atrial fibrillation in patients who received preoperative amiodarone and compare them to the incidence of atrial fibrillation in patients who did not received preoperative amiodarone.

Docetaxel, Carboplatin, and Bevacizumab in Treating Patients With Stage I, Stage II, or Stage III Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer That Can Be Removed By Surgery

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as docetaxel and carboplatin, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Monoclonal antibodies, such as bevacizumab, can block tumor growth in different ways. Some block the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Others find tumor cells and help kill them or carry tumor-killing substances to them. Bevacizumab may also stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking blood flow to the tumor. Giving docetaxel and carboplatin together with bevacizumab before surgery may make the tumor smaller and reduce the amount of normal tissue that needs to be removed. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well giving docetaxel and carboplatin together with bevacizumab works in treating patients with stage I, stage II, or stage III non-small cell lung cancer that can be removed by surgery.
