Combining more than one drug and giving the drugs in different combinations may kill more cancer cells. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of standard combination chemotherapy treatment with more intensive combination chemotherapy in treating children with acute lymphocytic leukemia.

PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of high-dose combination chemotherapy followed by total-body irradiation and peripheral stem cell transplantation in treating patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
