Patient Blood Management Program in Total Hip or Total Knee Arthroplasty

Total hip and knee arthroplasty are among the most common surgical procedures for which blood transfusion is prescribed. Patient blood management program has been proposed to decrease the need for transfusion. This program involve three pillars: preoperative improvement of erythropoiesis, intraoperative reduction of bleeding and postoperative management of anemia. Among the different steps of this program, reduction of bleeding and optimization of anemia are gaining popularity, but preoperative improvement of erythropoiesis is underused. The preoperative step of the blood management program is not systematically used because it requires a complex organization, is considered expensive, and finally because the others available techniques to reduce blood transfusion are easier to implement. The aim of this study was to assess, within a patient blood management program, the effectiveness of erythropoietin on reducing allogenic blood transfusion and anemia in patients requiring elective total hip or knee arthroplasty. Hyaluronic Acid Evaluation as Adjuvant to Temporomandibular Joint Arthroscopy

This study evaluates the addition of hyaluronic acid to temporomandibular joint arthroscopy in the treatment of internal derangements in adults. A participants group will receive temporomandibular joint arthroscopy plus hyaluronic acid, while the other group will receive temporomandibular joint arthroscopy. Hypothesis: hyaluronic acid as an adjunct in temporomandibular joint arthroscopic surgery provides additional benefits in clinical and radiological outcomes in temporomandibular joint internal derangements.

TMJ Dysfunction Following Use of SAD

The aim of this study is to assess how the use of a breathing tube (Supraglottic Airway Device) can affect the function of the jaw joint (Temporomandibular joint) movement. This type of breathing tube is used for nearly 60% of general anaesthetics. To facilitate insertion of this breathing tube, assisted mouth opening and forward movement of the jaw are required. These movements occur at the jaw joint (temporomandibular joint). In addition, for the duration of the operation the mouth is kept slightly open by a breathing tube. There are a few case reports in the literature suggesting minor effect on the jaw joint. Therefore, we wish to study this further by evaluating the function of the jaw joint, 4 to 24 hours after the operation.
