Filter by:A prospective randomized study of patients undergoing a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy was performed. Patients were randomized into 2 groups: those patients receiving the multivitamin supplement during 3 months (Group 1), and those receiving the supplement during 12 months (Group 2). Laboratory data were recorded: vitamins and oligoelements at 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery.
Iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy is a significant worldwide health problem, affecting 22% of pregnant women in industrialized countries and 52% in non-industrialized countries. Iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy is associated with increased maternal as well as fetal morbidity, including prematurity, low birth-weight and perinatal and infant loss. Therefore, routine iron supplementation during the second half of pregnancy has been recommended once daily. Others, however, support a selective iron supplementation only for women with iron deficiency anemia, in order to avoid the increased risk of haemoconcentration associated with routine iron supplementation. Unfortunately, compliance to either iron-supplementation programs, especially among pregnant women, is poor, due in part to the side effects associated with these preparations. Currently, there are many iron preparations available containing different types of iron salts, including ferrous sulfate, ferrous fumarate, ferrous ascorbate but common adverse drug reactions found with these preparations are mainly gastrointestinal intolerance like nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, while ferrous bis-glycinate (fully reacted chelated amino acid form of iron) rarely make complication. Product resulting from the reaction of a metal ion from a soluble salt with amino acids to form coordinate covalent bonds, the resulting molecule is called as chelate and chemical bonding process is called chelation. Ferrous bis-glycinate is highly stable and totally nutritionally functional chelate it is an amino acid fully reacted chelate which is formed by the binding of two molecules of glycine to one Fe2+ atom.
Intravenous iron preparations have been shown to be superior to oral iron and have largely replaced the treatment of anaemia in Northern countries. However, the socio-economic and medical conditions in low resource countries greatly differ from those in northern countries. Patients' different access to medication supply, perception of medication need and compliance as well as the burden of concomitant disease like malaria, soil-transmitted helminths, schistosomiasis, HIV and red blood cells (RBC) genetic disorders may influence effectiveness and safety of iron substitution modality. At MRC Human Nutrition Research, the investigators have developed an engineered analogue of the ferritin-core for safe and effective iron supplementation. Iron hydroxide adipate tartrate (IHAT) is a tartrate-modified, nano-disperse Fe(III) oxo-hydroxide, formed in an adipate buffer, with similar functional properties and small primary particle size (~2 nm) as the iron found in the ferritin core; it better mimics iron absorption from food than the non-physiological bolus doses of ferrous sulphate currently used. This exploratory study will test the hypothesis that IHAT has equivalent bioavailability to ferrous sulphate but produces a less harmful post-ingestion rise in transferrin saturation. The design is a 3-arm (IDA, non-IDA and IDA-IHAT new manufacture), crossover, randomised, single-dose study. Primary endpoint: Relative bioavailability value of IHAT versus ferrous sulphate. This will be determined from the red blood cell incorporation of isotope-labelled iron 14 days following a single oral dose. Secondary endpoints: Serum iron at 0, 2, 4, 6 hours following a single dose of each iron compound. Transferrin saturation at 0, 2, 4, 6 hours following a single dose of each iron compound. Plasma 58Fe and 57Fe at 0, 2, 4, 6 hours. Pathogen growth using ex vivo assays in serum collected from each subject at 0, 2, 4 and 6 hours following a single dose.
It is the investigators hypothesis that participants treated with Ferric Citrate (FC) during the non-dialysis CKD stage (4/5) with sufficient duration prior to initiating RRT, will result in improved biochemical control of anemia (Hb, TSAT) and mineral metabolism (P, FGF23) and furthermore, will result in a reduced need for ESA and intravenous iron. The investigators further hypothesize that effective treatment of anemia and mineral metabolism with FC in the pre-dialysis and transition period will result in improved physical functioning, reduced hospitalization and reduced total cost of care when compared to participants receiving contemporaneously provided standard of care therapy.
Examination of iron supplements routinely used in pregnancy to compare these with one another regarding effectiveness in the prevention of iron deficiency. Determination of ferritin / hemoglobin every pregnant woman under the first routine check. Classification into one of three subgroups (group 1: iron sulfate, Group 2: iron polymaltose, Group 3: multivitamin- multimineral) depending on the measured values. Repetition of hemoglobin every 8 weeks, at the entrance to birth and postpartum day 1, additional provision of ferritin at the entrance to birth. Recurrent upper respiratory infections ( RURTIs) are common in school aged children. An adequate iron status might reduce their prevalence. The aim of the study is to assess the percentage and type of RURTIs in Egyptian school children, assessing the percentage of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and the effect of iron supplementation on the recurrence and severity of upper respiratory tract infections .
Anemia of pregnancy is defined as a hemoglobin concentration of less than 11 g/dL in the first and third trimesters, and less than 10.5 g/dL in the second trimester. The rates of anemia are variable and depend largely on preexisting iron stores and supplementation. Estimates from the World Health Organization report that 35% to 75% of pregnant women in developing countries and 18% of women from industrialized countries are anemic. Maternal anemia is associated with an increased risk of preterm birth, low birthweight, and small for gestational age infants. Many studies have shown improvement in these outcomes with maternal iron supplementation in cases of iron-deficiency anemia. Mounting evidence also indicates that maternal iron deficiency in pregnancy reduces fetal iron stores, perhaps well into the first year of life. Anemia in pregnancy can also impact maternal morbidity and mortality. Viteri reported that anemic pregnant women are at greater risk of death during the perinatal period and that anemia is the major contributory or sole cause of death in 20-40% of the 500,000 maternal deaths per year. The need for iron averages close to 1000mg in a typical singleton gestation. This amount considerably exceeds the iron stores of most women and will result in iron-deficiency anemia unless supplemental iron is taken. One problem with iron supplement use is compliance, secondary to adverse effects such as constipation and nausea. Research on the use of cast iron pots in decreasing the incidence of iron-deficiency anemia in non-pregnant women has been promising. These studies have demonstrated good compliance with no reported adverse effects. The aim of our study is to determine if providing anemic women in the first trimester of pregnancy with a cast iron pot will decrease the incidence of anemia later in pregnancy. Hypothesis: Cooking in cast iron pots will increase hematocrit levels in pregnancy.
