Filter by:Pain is a complex experience influenced by gender and genetics, and, by psychosocial and sensory experiences. Pain sensitivity is thus highly variable between individuals. In the present study we evaluate individuals´ pain perception in response to a number of different pain stimuli in 100 healthy volunteers (50 females and 50 males). The data will allow us to assess pain sensitivity, to predict pain responses and to investigate gender related differences in pain perception. A second aim is to evaluate the robustness of the different pain-tests since the tests are repeated with an interval of 2-4 weeks.
The investigators plan to launch a Specific Oral Tolerance Induction (SOTI) pilot study in order to assess the efficacy and the safety of hypoallergenic (H.A.) wheat cereals, for children with allergy to wheat. The study has the potential to offer a desensitization treatment option for children allergic to wheat. The investigators hypothesize that H.A. wheat cereals have similar efficacy with less side effects than native wheat cereals.
The topological perception theory proposed a precise description for how one organizes the visual world that eliminates the vagueness of subjective phenomenology. In addition, the topological theory challenges the dominant computational view on the part-to-whole hierarchy of visual information processing. Lines of evidence from adult psychophysics, brain imaging data, and even honeybee's behavior have supported the notion that the global topological properties are the very primitives of visual representation. However, the question of how the sensitivity to topological properties originates during development has not been explored much. In a previous study, the investigators found that 2- to 6 month old infants could reliably discriminate stimuli based on topological differences, but failed to do so based on geometric differences. Using familiarization/novelty preference procedure, the present study intends to explore the visual sensitivity for topological properties in newborn infants. Experiment 1 focuses on whether neonates can discriminate a disk (no hole) and a ring (with a hole) that are topologically different, and/or a disk (no hole) and a triangle (no hole) that are geometrically different. Experiment 2 focuses on whether neonates can detect a change in the number of holes and/or the size of the hole. If newborn infants are only sensitive to topological properties and not to geometric properties, this will be a strong proof for the claim that topological property is the very "primitive" visual representation at empirical as well as theoretical level.
To diagnose aspirin hypersensitivity in asthmatics by using and safe, low-dose aspirin oral challenge. Hypothesis 1: A low dose of oral ASA (20 or 40 mg) will induce significantly different concentrations of arachidonic acid metabolites in ASA-sensitive asthmatics as compared to ASA-tolerant asthmatics. Hypothesis 2: The low dose (20 or 40 mg) ASA challenge will be well tolerated by ASA-sensitive asthmatics.
A cluster of reports of hypersensitivity reactions among patients who switched from carvedilol (immediate release formulation, referred to hereafter as carvedilol) to carvedilol extended release was received during the initial post-launch period of carvedilol extended release. In follow up to this observation, product labeling for both agents was updated and a nested case control study was subsequently conducted to examine the risk of serious hypersensitivity reactions i.e. anaphylactic reaction and/or angioedema among patients who used carvedilol extended release compared to carvedilol and separately compared to other long acting beta(β)-blockers. This proposed analysis is an update to the previously conducted analysis using the same database, LabRx, now containing 2 additional years of data, which should provide a larger number of carvedilol extended release exposed subjects.
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of grass pollen-derived peptides administrated orally to treat seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis.
The Spaeth-Richman Contrast Sensitivity (SPARCS) test is a new method of assessing contrast sensitivity. The test, another way to measure vision, is performed on any standard computer with internet access. Patients will be tested with SPARCS and with the standard Pelli-Robson contrast test.
Nitric oxide (NO) was considered as a mediator of nasal inflammation and the measurement of nasal nitric oxide (nNO) may assist in the diagnosis of nasal inflammation. Few data exists comparing nNO with established, larger accepted reference standard for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) diagnosis. Moreover, the role of atopic status on nNO in nasal inflammatory diseases has not been reported. The aim of our study was to determine the value of nNO in patients with chronic nasal inflammation, and to assess the relationship between nNO and atopic status in these patients. A total of 131 randomized patients suffering form chronic nonallergic nasal inflammation and 20 healthy volunteers were finally recruited. nNO was measured by NIOX devices. Sinus computed tomography (CT) scan, nasal endoscope and nasal symptoms evaluation were used in the different diagnosis of chronic rhinitis (CR), CRS without nasal polyps (CRSsNP) and CRS with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). Atopic status was confirmed by skin prick test and serum IgE levels. Blood eosinophils were evaluated simultaneously. Relationships among nNO, various atopic characteristics and chronic nasal inflammation were evaluated.
Allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma are considered as "one airway, one disease". Although there is increasing evidence for an association between allergy and depression, it remains unknown if the relationship between AR and asthma has extra influence on the psychological status of the patients. The aim of our study was to investigate the influence pattern of asthma on the psychological status in AR patients. The Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) was employed to analyze the psychological status of 524 individuals with AR. Independent sample T-tests, one-way ANOVA and multivariate ANOVA were used for data analyses.
