Efficacy & Safety of Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF) Plus Peginterferon α-2a (PEG) Versus TDF or PEG Monotherapy in Chronic Hepatitis B

This study will evaluate the safety and efficacy of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) plus peginterferon α-2a (PEG) combination therapy versus standard of care TDF monotherapy or PEG monotherapy in non-cirrhotic adults with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV). The study will consist of 2 phases for participants in the TDF+PEG 48 week, TDF 48 week+PEG 16 week, and PEG 48 week groups. Following an initial 48 weeks of treatment, participants in these groups will be monitored for 24 weeks for signs of worsening HBV, and those with new signs and/or symptoms will be eligible to receive TDF monotherapy during a retreatment phase, up to Week 120.

Efficacy of Nitazoxanide in the Treatment of Chronic Hepatitis C Virus (HCV)

Chronic hepatitis C has become an endemic disease in Egypt with a rising prevalence (genotype 4), worldwide it also poses a significant health burden. To date standard of care treatment (pegylated interferon and ribavirin) give modest results with a sustained virological response (SVR) of about 50%. Several pharmaceutical and herbal agents have been used with an aim to improve current results. Recent reports have suggested an increased SVR with the addition of Nitazoxanide to standard of care. The results are preliminary and need to be confirmed. This is a randomized trial to assess the efficacy of nitazoxanide added to standard of care compared to standard of care alone.

Study of SCY-635, Pegasys and Copegus in Hepatitis C

This study will examine the effectiveness of 28 days of triple combination therapy including SCY-635 with peginterferon alfa 2a and ribavirin in reducing serum HCV RNA levels. An additional 20 weeks of treatment with the currently approved standard of care will be offered to all participants. The Week 24 visit will be the last on-study visit. After the Week 24 visit, all subjects with undetectable HCV RNA will be given the option to continue treatment with standard of care for an additional 24 weeks (out to Week 48) under the care of their Principal Investigator.
