Filter by:Malnutrition occurs in up to 50% of patients requiring elective surgery for neoplastic diseases. It exerts a detrimental influence on outcome of surgery, because it can suppress immune function, exaggerate stress response and cause organ system dysfunction. Increased susceptibility to infection, protracted wound healing, impaired blood clotting and vessel wall fragility have been shown to be the leading causes of postoperative morbidity and mortality in malnourished patients undergoing major surgical resections. This trial is designed as a prospective randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled pilot study in a academic single center in Switzerland. A total of 50 malnourished patients with gastro-intestinal tumors will receive orally glutamine or placebo-treatment during a period of 5 days prior to surgery. The investigators hypothesize that oral Glutamine administration is feasible, well tolerated, will decrease postoperative morbidity, will suppress postoperative cell damage and inflammatory response, and will improve the perioperative immunocompetence of the patients.
This phase I trial studies the side effects and the best dose of trebananib and temsirolimus when given together in treating patients with solid tumors that are metastatic or cannot be removed by surgery. Trebananib may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking blood flow to the tumor. Temsirolimus may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. Giving trebananib with temsirolimus may be an effective treatment for solid tumors.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of a combined treatment of nutritional therapy and physical exercise in palliative cancer out-patients. The investigators hypothesize that this combined intervention consisting of an increased energy- and protein intake and physical exercise level improves quality of life (QoL), functional and clinical status.
Substantial progress has been made in the treatment of cancer through the use of targeted therapies, but what works for one patient might not work for another patient. Certain drugs are now being developed that target specific molecules in the body that are believed to be part of the disease. Biomarkers are specific characteristics of the cancer that may help provide prognostic information (i.e. how well patients will be regardless of the treatments given) or help predict sensitivity or resistance to a specific treatment. The study will collect archival tumor samples (previously collected biopsy or surgical tumor samples) to provide biomarker data about a patient's cancer, in order to help their physicians to identify which clinical trials of molecularly targeted therapies may be most appropriate for the patient in the future.
This clinical trial studies fosaprepitant dimeglumine in preventing nausea and vomiting in patients with gastrointestinal cancer receiving combination chemotherapy. Antiemetic drugs, such as fosaprepitant dimeglumine, may help lessen or prevent nausea and vomiting in patients treated with chemotherapy.
The purpose of this study is to identify what makes it easier and what makes it harder to take oral chemotherapy.
BIOMARKER ANALYSES 1. FNA Sample: From each enrolled patient who meets the inclusion criteria, FNA sample will only be taken . FNA will be carried out only in patients with feasible biopsy or FNA site. Ascites or pleural fluid will be collected for analysis 2. Blood Samples From each enrolled patient who meets the inclusion criteria, blood samples will be collected. 3 mL blood sample will be collected . 3. tumor tissue Archived Tumor Tissue (Slides) Samples Primary tumor and/or a metastatic lesion collected. Approximately 5 unstained slides (if available) are collected.
Resveratrol has been shown to activate a protein called Notch-1. Signaling of Notch-1 has been shown to prevent tumor cell growth. Resveratrol has also been shown to prevent growth of tumors in mice. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of resveratrol and Notch-1 on neuroendocrine tumor tissue and to examine how people with neuroendocrine tumors who take resveratrol for up to three months tolerate the product.
The primary objectives are to determine feasibility and the acute toxicity profile of proton therapy with concurrent continuous infusion 5-FU chemotherapy. Secondary objectives are to determine late toxicities and to generate preliminary data on clinical efficacy.
This is a single-arm, open-label, phase I study of combination therapy with SOM 230 and FOLFIRI. We will utilize a sequential dose-escalation design to define the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of SOM 230 when combined with standard doses of FOLFIRI.
