Telephone Support for Advanced Gastrointestinal Cancer Patients and Caregivers

This trial tests telephone-based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a type of psychotherapy, to reduce fatigue interference with activities, mood, and cognition in advanced gastrointestinal (GI) cancer patients and family caregiver burden. ACT includes mindfulness exercises (e.g., meditations, performing activities with greater awareness), identifying personal values (e.g., family, spirituality), and engaging in activities consistent with these values. A total of 40 patient-caregiver dyads were randomly assigned in equal numbers to either the ACT intervention or an education/support condition. Dyads in both conditions participated in six weekly 50-minute telephone sessions. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, 2 weeks post-intervention, and 3 months post-intervention. The investigators hypothesize that ACT will lead to improved primary and secondary outcomes as compared to education/support. Study findings will inform a large-scale trial of intervention efficacy.

The investigators hypothesize that an early assessment of the clinical toxicity of the patient is possible via patient reported outcomes and that this information provides at least the same information level as the clinical examination of the patient made by the doctor. The early decision to prepare chemotherapy medications based on the indirect early collection of clinical information from the patient via a patient reported outcome should help minimize the number of chemotherapy medications destroyed.

Personalized Functional Profiling in Metastatic Gastrointestinal Cancer or Recurrent Glioblastoma Patients in Luxembourg.

The investigators are developing a novel standardized and centralized approach named Integrated Personalized Functional Profiling (PFP) in Luxembourg. Based on recent improvements in cancer biopsy-derived 3D-culture technologies the PFP process will screen patient derived cells (PDCs) with FDA/EMA-approved drugs to generate personalized functional response profiles. The selected drug through PFP technology will provide personalized treatment recommendation for the patient. This pilot study will evaluate the clinical feasibility of setting-up an effective workflow as a first step. Outcomes from this study will be used subsequently to help plan the clinical validation of the implementation of PFP.
