The Cohort of Swedish Men began in 1997, when all men born between 1918 and 1952 and residing in two counties in central Sweden received a questionnaire including about 350 items concerning diet and other lifestyle factors. A second questionnaire was sent out in 2008-09.
The Swedish Mammography Cohort began in 1987-1990, when 66,651 women living in two counties in central Sweden completed a mailed questionnaire that included items about their diet, parity, age at first child's birth, history of breast cancer in family, weight, height, and education. Follow-up questionnaires have been sent out in 1997 and in 2008-09.
Study consists of 6 treatment cohorts of 12 subjects with chronic pain, opioid-induced bowel dysfunction, and opioid physical dependence. Total duration of treatment for each subject will be up to 28 days. Each subject will receive a single dose of study drug, administered orally in the morning of Day 15 under fasted conditions. Cohort 1: 0.1 mg of S-297995 or placebo. Cohort 2: 0.3 mg of S-297995 or placebo. Cohort 3: 1 mg of S-297995 or placebo. Cohort 4: 3 mg of S-297995 or placebo. Cohort 5: 0.03 mg of S-297995 or placebo. Cohort 6: 0.01 mg of S-297995 or placebo. The primary objective of the study is to evaluate the safety of single doses of oral S-297995 in subjects physically dependent on opioids
Doctors at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC) are doing a research study to learn if a gluten free-dairy free (GFCF) diet is helpful in improving gastrointestinal symptoms associated with autism. Hypothesis: The gluten free/casein free diet (GFCF) will result in a higher proportion of subjects having reduction in gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Primary Study Objective: - To assess the effect of a GFCF diet on GI symptoms associated with ASD. Secondary Objectives: - To assess if improvements in GI symptoms result in improvements in autistic behavior when using a GFCF diet in the dietary management of GI symptoms associated with ASD - To determine the nutritional impact of a GFCF restrictive diet - To assess the role of food allergies in the manifestation of GI symptoms This is a 14-week study that requires between 5 & 9 office visits. All study related activities -including physical exams, blood samples and allergy testing - and an amino acid based supplement drink, are at no cost. Research study visits will take place at MGHfC in Boston, or at Newton Wellesley Hospital in Newton, or at Lurie Center/LADDERS in Lexington.
We are conducting a study to learn if probiotics, which are live bacteria found in food like yogurt and cheese, will improve symptoms of abdominal pain. Individuals participating in this study will take probiotic pills to see if this affects the expression of certain pain receptors in the intestines that relate to pain sensation. Biopsies will be taken from the colon before subjects take the probiotic pills. Subjects will then be given one of two different types of probiotic pills to take for 3-4 weeks. After taking the supplements, more biopsies will be collected to see if any changes have taken places. This study requires one screening visit and two clinic visits to UNC hospital. Subjects will also complete daily diary cards for 2 weeks during the study to record their symptoms and also collect 2 stool samples.
Since the first description of citrulline as a potential marker for intestinal function in 1998, its use has been investigated in a variety of disease processes including Short Bowel Syndrome, Celiac disease, chemotherapy and radiation induced intestinal injury, infections producing intestinal cytopathic effects like Adenovirus, and predicting rejection in intestinal transplantation. The use of citrulline levels as a diagnostic tool to predict gastrointestinal disease in the premature population has not been properly addressed. The introduction of enteral nutrition in the premature infant is a process of trial and error, knowing that the immaturity of the gastrointestinal system may lead to frequent episodes of feeding intolerance. This is augmented by the fear of the development of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) once feeds are commenced. NEC is a condition characterized by disruption of the intestinal epithelial barrier, a pathogenic process shared with some of the conditions mentioned above for which citrulline has proven clinically useful. A normal pattern of citrulline production has not been established in the premature population. Previous studies have shown decreased levels of glutamine and arginine in premature infants up to 10 days prior to the development of necrotizing enterocolitis. Glutamine and arginine are two amino acids closely involved in the synthesis and catabolism of citrulline. The investigators therefore hypothesize that defining a normal pattern of citrulline production in the premature population may prove to be a clinically useful diagnostic tool to screen for gastrointestinal disease.
Background: Functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGID) is the most common gastrointestinal disease in daily clinical practice. The disease is symptomatic but has no identifiable cause by standard diagnostic tests such as endoscopy. It is characterized by its frequent relapses and thus the disease causes a significant level of stress and anxiety to patients. Due to the complexity and chronicity of the disease, it is believed that appropriate counseling on the nature and management of the disease is necessary to decrease patient's anxiety level and improve quality of life. Indication: Patients who have symptoms suggestive of FGID including non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (NERD), functional dyspepsia (FD) or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Aim: To validate the effectiveness of counseling in patients suffering from FGID. Method: Patients recruited to the study will follow the usual management of patients attending the Gastroenterology specialty clinic in Prince of Wales Hospital. Standard blood tests and endoscopy will be performed. Standard medication will be given to the patients for 8 weeks after endoscopy and the patients will come back to the specialty clinic for a final visit. The patient will be given an "on-demand follow up within 1 year" option at final visit. The patient will decide if he/she wants to come back to our specialty clinic to follow up his/her problem within one year. Follow-up after Final Visit Follow-up questionnaires will be mailed to patients 6 months, 1 and 2 years after Final visit. Randomization: All the patients will be randomized into two groups in First Visit: 1) Control group, and 2) Counseling group. Both groups of patients will follow the above protocol, except that 2 extra counseling sessions will be arranged for the Counseling group immediately after visiting the physician.
The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of a standardized postoperative bowel regimen of over-the-counter medications in subjects undergoing minimally invasive urogynecologic surgery.
The aim of this study is to determine whether greater rectal cancer downstaging and regression occurs when surgery is delayed to 12 weeks after completion of radiotherapy/chemotherapy compared to 6 weeks. Hypothesis: Greater downstaging and tumour regression is observed when surgery is delayed to 12 weeks after completion of CRT compared to 6 weeks.
