Third Molar Extraction and Pulsed Electromagnetic FieldTherapy

This study is a prospective, randomized, double-blinded, controlled, clinical trial that evaluates the efficacy of using PEMF in the postoperative period in decreasing swelling and pain after extraction of impacted third molars. The study group will be comprised of subjects that will receive PEMF Actiband treatment for postoperative management of pain and edema. The control group will be comprised of the subjects that will receive a placebo patch as treatment for postoperative management of pain and edema. Thirty (30) subjects will be randomly assigned to each group. Enrollment will continue until 60 qualified subjects have been recruited. Eligibility criteria will be based on the standards for conducting oral surgery procedures on third molar extractions, in addition to safety considerations and contraindications for the Actiband and other agents to be used. Moreover, the selected subjects will have the same surgical difficulty and surgical trauma anticipated standardized by classification system of impacted third molars. All inclusion and exclusion criteria will be thoroughly explained in the relevant section of this proposal. Postoperative edema and pain will be evaluated using 3dMD and Visual Analog Scale, respectively. Different measurements will be obtained immediately before the surgery and in standard periodic intervals as described in the Materials and Methods section of the proposal. Any difference in postoperative edema, pain, and site responsible for request of rescue pain medication will be compared and analyzed between the two groups.

PeriOcular and INTravitreal Corticosteroids for Uveitic Macular Edema Trial

To evaluate the relative efficacy of three commonly utilized regional corticosteroids for the regional treatment of uveitic macular edema: periocular triamcinolone acetonide; intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide; intravitreal dexamethasone implant. The primary efficacy measure will be percent change in central subfield thickness as measured by OCT at 8 weeks. Participants will continue in the study for 24 weeks in order to evaluate relative effects of the 3 treatment strategies on the duration of treatment effects, requirement for additional injections, and adverse effects. Note: The planned sample size for the POINT Trial was 267 subjects. On 17 July 2017, with 192 subjects enrolled, the Data and Safety Monitoring Committee (DSMC) reviewed the planned interim analysis and recommended that the goals of the trial could be accomplished by completing follow-up of enrolled subjects without the recruitment of additional subjects. Per the DSMC recommendations, recruitment was suspended and follow-up of enrolled subjects was completed according to the protocol.

Comparative Effectiveness of Family Problem-Solving Therapy (F-PST) for Adolescent TBI

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the most common cause of acquired disability in youth and a source of significant morbidity and family burden. Novel behavior problems are among the most common and problematic consequences, yet many youth fail to receive needed psychological services due to lack of identification and access. Linking youth with TBI to effective treatments could improve functional outcomes, reduce family burden, and increase treatment satisfaction. The investigators overarching aim is to compare the effectiveness, feasibility, and acceptability of three formats of family problem solving therapy (F-PST) for improving functional outcomes of complicated mild to severe adolescent TBI: therapist-guided, face-to-face; therapist-guided online; and self-guided, online F-PST.

Recent reports suggest that anti-VEGF agents (ranibizumab) may suppress the progression of retinal nonperfusion area. This protective effect would cause the increase of the oxygen consumption in the diabetic retina. We expect that the current study using the retinal oximetry would show the protective effects of ranibizumab on the hypoxia in the diabetic retina. This study is designed to analyze the effects of ranibizumab (Lucentis) to the retinal oxygen saturation or consumption in eyes with diabetic macular edema.

Prospective, Randomized Clinical Trial Comparing Macular Photocoagulation With or Without Intravitreal Bevacizumab or Triamcinolone for the Treatment of Diabetic Macular Edema

Purpose: To compare the effects of macular photocoagulation with or without intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) or triamcinolone (IVTA) for the treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME). Casuistic and Methods: 58 eyes of 44 patients with diffuse DME were randomized to receive either IVB + focal/grid laser (IVB-Laser, n=19), IVTA + focal/grid laser (IVTA-Laser, n=16) or focal/grid laser alone (Laser, n=23). Ophthalmic evaluation, including best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP) and central macular thickness (CMT) were performed at baseline and monthly for 12 months.
