This is a prospective, multi-centre, post-approval clinical study to assess the safety and the performance of the Calcivis Caries Activity Imaging System in aiding the identification of active caries lesions on the occlusal surfaces of human teeth. Following the identification of potential caries lesions by oral examination under ICDAS (International Caries Detection and Assessment System) guidelines, a disclosing solution will be applied which will cause areas of active demineralization (loss of calcium ions) to luminesce - these will be captured with an intra-oral camera to produce mapping images of the tooth surface. For the purposes of this study the presence / absence of luminescence will be used as an indicator of lesion activity / inactivity.
This clinical trial was performed to evaluate the nano-filled resin modified glass ionomer (RMGI) -with a brand name of "Ketac Nano"- as a filling material for the treatment of caries in primary teeth. Children aged 5-8 years were selected and treated with either Ketac Nano or another conventional RMGI called Vitremer. Then, the treated children were evaluated at baseline, after one yeat and after two years. The hypothesis to be tested in the present study was: The clinical performance of nano-filled RMGI (Ketac Nano) in class I primary molars will differ from that of its preceding conventional RMGI (Vitremer).
Radiographs have been used to aid dentists in detecting the presence of cavities in the deciduous teeth of children. This procedure is globally recommended because the conventional clinical examination usually overlooks some cavities. However, the real benefit of performing dental radiographs for this purpose is still unclear. Besides the hazards of ionizing radiation, the radiographs could provoke overtreatment of the children; hence, dentists would tend to restore more teeth than would be really necessary. Nowadays, it is preferable to overlook some cavities than treat the teeth unnecessarily. Therefore, the investigators aimed to perform this study to compare two different strategies for detecting cavities in deciduous teeth of children: one based on clinical examination performed alone and other using radiographs adjunct to the clinical examination. To compare these strategies, the investigators will consider outcomes related to children's health and welfare.
- Assess the effectiveness of sealing localized marginal defects of amalgam restorations that were initially scheduled for replacement of restorations. - The hypothesis was that sealed defective margins of the amalgam restorations shows similar performance than replacement amalgam restorations.
