Filter by:Bacteria that live in the mouth can digest fermentable carbohydrates such as sucrose, fructose, and glucose to make acid. This acid can cause demineralization of the tooth and lead to dental caries or decay. Noncariogenic carbohydrate sweeteners, such as sugar alcohols, can be used to replace fermentable carbohydrates in foods, thereby decreasing the risk of caries. In order for a sweetener to be labeled as a noncariogenic sweetener, the FDA requires that when present in food, the food should not lower the dental plaque pH below 5.7 either during or up to 30 minutes after consumption. The purpose of this study is to determine whether a new developmental sweetener can be fermented by the bacteria in the mouth and lead to acid production. This will be done by measuring the pH of dental plaque following consumption of the sweetener.
The study hypothesis is the difference in therapeutic effect of two varnish formulations (G1 = NaF, 2.26%F, G2 = NaF, 2.71% F + CaF2). These products are commercially available in the Brazilian and international market and they are used for dental caries as white spot lesions control.
The long term goals of this project are to develop and implement a combined prenatal and postnatal intervention to decrease early childhood caries. The program is based on risk assessment, diet intervention and counseling. To accomplish these goals a pilot study is needed to determine: 1) The ability to recruit and retain pregnant mothers in an intervention program; 2) The levels of S. mutans in pregnant mothers; 3) The ability of a diet intervention to decrease S. mutans in pregnant mothers.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficacy of different sodium fluoride (NaF) containing toothpastes in prevention of dental caries. Change from baseline fluoride data at various time points up to four hours after a single brushing with NaF containing toothpastes will be evaluated.

The primary goals of this project are to determine the anticaries benefits of a prototype multi-mineral mouthrinse containing 225 ppm fluoride and 30 ppm of a Ca through the remineralization of enamel white-spots (non-cavitated lesions). The selection of patients with pre-existing white-spot lesions will permit an opportunity to evaluate the efficacy of the multi-mineral mouthrinse in reminerzalizing and/or inhibiting progression of enamel white-spot lesions.
Aims: 1. To develop a food supplement containing a health-promoting probiotic bacteria (B. lactis BB12) and xylitol to be administered with a novel soft, possibly occlusion-friendly pacifier. 2. Test in a clinical study how feasible the method is and to study how the intervention affects caries occurrence. Main hypothesis: The administration of B. lactis BB12 and xylitol affects beneficially the dental health of the child.
