Long-term Effects of a Lay Health Advisor Intervention on Immigrant Children's Caries

The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of a lay health advisor (LHA) intervention on immigrant children's caries and preventive behaviors.This randomized controlled trial included mother-child pairs in the intervention group (IG) and a brochure-only control group (CG), respectively. The IG received a four-week one-on-one session by an LHA on caries-related knowledge and brushing techniques. Baseline and follow-up surveys were used to collect the data in caries experience and maternal caries preventive behavior.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of using orthodontic bands with glass ionomer cement to arrest or reverse interproximal lesions as a preventive treatment compared to monitoring and oral hygiene. The investigators hypothesize that placing orthodontic bands with glass ionomer cement will arrest and possibly remineralize incipient carious lesions compared to teeth that are being monitored without intervention.

Carious Tissue Selective Removal on Permanent Posterior Teeth.

This study is a prospective randomized controlled study of patients who come to the University. The aim is to evaluate the success rate of selective removal of carious tissue in deep lesions of posterior teeth. Three different materials will be used as liners (VitreBond ™Plus, BioDentine™, and Theracal™ LC). Post-operative pain, clinical, and radiographic success will be evaluated at one, two, and five-year follow-up. The null hypothesis is that there will be no statistically significant differences in rates of successful treatment with the three materials used.

Orthodontic Varnish Microbiology Study

Orthodontic treatment is common in teenagers, which typically involve the attachment of metal brackets to the teeth. These brackets often impede proper oral hygiene, leading to plaque accumulation and the development of white spots lesions (the early stage of cavity development). Our study aims to investigate the efficacy of different commercially available fluoride varnishes to treat these white spot lesions after the completion of orthodontic treatment and evaluate their effect on the oral microbiome. Target enrollment is 120 subjects. The study will follow a split-mouth design, with each subject receiving different treatment on the left and right sides of their mouth. The subjects will be randomized into 3 groups, with each group receiving two of the following three options: placebo varnish, traditional sodium fluoride varnish, and a resin-modified glass ionomer light-cured fluoride varnish. There will be 4 total visits for this study: Baseline (day 0): Oral health assessed, plaque collected, intraoral photos taken, dental cleaning performed, DiagnoDent measurements taken, varnishes applied T1 (day 30): Oral health assessed, plaque collected, intraoral photos taken, DiagnoDent measurements taken, varnishes reapplied T2 (day 90): Oral health assessed, plaque collected, intraoral photos taken, DiagnoDent measurements taken, varnishes reapplied T3 (day 180): Oral health assessed, plaque collected, intraoral photos taken, DiagnoDent measurements taken, dental cleaning performed Participants will be instructed to use regular fluoridated toothpaste and floss twice per day for the duration of the study.

Restoration Repairs Using Composite Resin Versus Glass Ionomer in Primary Molars: a Randomized Clinical Trial

The objective of this randomized clinical study is to evaluate the survival of repairs in restorations using composite resin (CR) or high viscosity glass ionomer cement (GIC) in primary molars. This trial is nested to another study (NCT03520309), so patients will be enrolled from CARDEC 3. 312 restorations will be included and randomized into two groups: glass ionomer cement (Riva Self Cure, SDI, Australia) and composite resin (Filtek Bulk Fill and Filtek Bulk Fill Flow, 3M ESPE, USA). After the end of treatments, patients will be followed for 24 months to assess the success of the restorations, which will be considered as the absence of the need for reintervention. The Kaplan-Meier survival curves and the log-rank tests will be performed to assess survival between groups and Cox regression analysis will be used to compare the outcome with the variables (α = 5%).
