Filter by:The purpose of this study is to compare esthetic, functional and biological properties of two restoration materials used to fill cavities. One material is called "Filtek™ Supreme" which is a traditional tooth colored resin composite that is placed in the cavity in layers and hardened with UV light. The second material is called "SonicFill™ 2," which is a bulk fill composite that uses an ultrasonic hand piece to change the material from a solid into a liquid in order to place it into the cavity. This material can be placed in the cavity in 1 layer, and is hardened using UV light. Both materials have been FDA approved as non-significant risk devices for filling cavities. In each subject, one tooth with a cavity will be randomly selected to receive one filling material, and a second tooth with a cavity will be randomly selected to receive the second material. The fillings will be observed over a two year period to determine clinical acceptability.
This study will evaluate the clinical performance of glass carbomer cement restorations in restoring proximal lesions in primary molars compared to that of resin modified glass ionomer cement and composite resin restorations. Teeth will be randomly assigned to one of the three restoration groups and the restorations will be evaluated clinically and radiographically every six months.
The purpose of this single-blind study is to evaluate whether C16G2 Varnish administered in multiple doses can effectively kill the bacteria in the oral cavity that cause dental caries.
Orthodontic appliance causes increase in plaque accumulation, especially around brackets, wires and attachments. Advances in orthodontics in recent time have led to improved quality of appliance and treatment procedures ultimately resulting in improvised standard of patient care. These bacteria metabolize different kind of carbohydrates accumulated around orthodontic appliances and create acidic environment in the oral cavity leading to enamel demineralization around the brackets and white spot lesions. This study was carried out to evaluate and compare the efficacy of probiotic toothpaste and chlorhexidine mouthwash in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with individuals who are not using them.
The purpose of the study is to determine the prevalence of dental caries in preterm birth children aged 2-5 years in primary dentition.
Damage to teeth from decay or previous old silver fillings can be repaired with tooth-coloured filling materials that stick to the tooth. These materials have been around for some years and have become more sophisticated; with greater ease of placement by the dentist and better durability for the patient. The fillings are designed to be used in combination with a specific glue (adhesive) that is designed to stick to the different parts of the tooth to provide a good seal, the outer enamel and the inner dentine. This study will examine the performance of a state-of-the-art modern tooth coloured filling material (Ceram X) in combination with an existing adhesive (control adhesive) and a new adhesive (Prime & Bond Universal) used in two different techniques; both of which are known to work but one is easier to apply. This results in three treatment groups. At the start of the study, the test material Prime&Bond Universal is CE-marked, as are all other medical devices used. Thus, this study is not conducted to meet any regulatory requirements. The rationale of this study is the extension of knowledge primarily concerning the clinical performance of Prime&Bond Universal in molars. Two investigators (to be confirmed) will place a minimum of 25 restorations per group (75 restorations in total) to assess the performance of the materials in a comparative design. The study restorations will be monitored for a period of 18 months (with the option to extend the evaluation period to 48 months). After placement of restorations under controlled clinical conditions, the primary objective of the study is the determination of post-operative sensitivity and pulp vitality, marginal adaptation and staining of margins of the restorations. In addition, fracture of material and retention, recurrent caries, occlusal contour and wear, approximal anatomical form will be determined as well as the failure rate as defined by the ADA.
caries-free (CF) individuals caries-active (CA) individuals (DMFT ≥ 6) will be recruited. Subjects will be instructed to brush their teeth twice daily for 3 min using Colgate® Sensitive Pro-Relief® toothpaste (containing 8% arginine and 1450 ppm NaF) for 2 weeks. Supra- and subgingival plaque, saliva, and in situ plaque samples will be collected before and after the treatment for laboratory analyses.
Although the Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) is well settled in the literature regarding occlusal-proximal cavities, the longevity of these restorations is still lower when compared to occlusal ones. This factor is often associated with low mechanical properties of glass ionomer cements (GIC). The objective of this randomized clinical trial is to evaluate the long-term cost-effectiveness of two different materials: an encapsulated GIC - Equia (GC Corp), compared with Giomer (Beautifill Bulk Restorative - Shofu) used as restoratives materials in occlusal-proximal ART restorations of primary molars. Children aged between 4 and 8 years, will be selected in schools in the city of Cerquilho, São Paulo. All restorations will be held following the precepts of the ART and the manufacturer's instructions. The restorations will be evaluated after 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months according to Roeleveld et al. (2006) criteria. To verify the survival of the restorations will be used Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and log rank test. To evaluate the association between the clinical variables, Cox regression test will be applied. For the cost analysis will be used analysis of variance. The level of significance for all tests will be considered to 5%.

Early childhood caries (ECC) is a global health problem that causes pain and infection to the children affected. It is a common disease among preschool children in Hong Kong. There is a great need to improve at-home ECC preventive measures through oral health promotional activities as early as possible to parents. The investigators will propose a 4-year randomized controlled trial of family-centered oral health promotion for new parents which aims to increase the proportion of parents brushing their infants' teeth at 1 year, establishing proper feeding and dietary habits, reducing the transfer of MS from the parents to their infants and then reducing the risk of ECC of the children at 3 years. The investigators also aim to improve the oral hygiene status of the new parents and prevention of oral diseases among themselves. First-time expectant mothers and their husbands will be recruited. The recruited families will be randomly allocated to the test and control groups. In the test group, personal hygiene instruction (OHI) for the expectant mothers and their husbands together with oral health education materials on infant's tooth development and eruption, establishment of proper feeding, dietary and toothbrushing habits will be given before the delivery of the new born babies. Reinforcement of OHI and demonstrations on how to clean the infant's oral cavities and perform toothbrushing will be delivered after the babies are born. Comprehensive data will be collected from the mothers, fathers and the infants in both the test and control groups at different time points through dental examination, biological testing and questionnaire survey. The CONSORT statement will be strictly followed when conducting the clinical trial, analyzing the data and reporting the results. It is anticipated that the effectiveness of oral health promotion starting at the pregnancy period and for both expecting mothers and their husbands will be greater in preventing the infants from developing ECC. Furthermore, establishing good oral health care habits will have long term benefits, helping safeguard the oral health of the children as they grow and the family as a whole. This study will also provide much needed evidence for the further development of oral health policies and oral health promotion programmes in Hong Kong; specifically how these can be integrated into family health education so as to achieve a higher effectiveness. This will contribute significantly to the improvement of oral health in the population of Hong Kong.
