Filter by:Dental caries is the destruction of the tooth structure in the presence of organic acids produced by cariogenic bacteria located in the dental biofilm (Dowker et al., 1999 and Robinson et al., 2000).Tooth enamel comprises 90% substituted hydroxyapatite (Ca10 (PO4)6(OH) 2), which is subjected to consecutive cycles of demineralization and remineralization. This is an interrupted process, with periods of remineralization and demineralization occurring, depending on the state of the oral environment in terms of the prolonged accumulation and retention of bacterial plaque on the enamel surface (Aoba, 2004). Oral bacteria ferment carbohydrates to produce organic acids which lower the pH and cause the subsurface dissolution of the hydroxyapatite crystals. Under normal physiological conditions (pH7), saliva is supersaturated with calcium and phosphate ions which diffuse into the vacancies created during acid-mediated demineralization episodes (Dowker et al., 1999 and Robinson et al., 2000). The demineralization of enamel (white spot lesions) is a significant problem during and after orthodontic treatment with prevalence 71.1% and various preventive measures have been suggested to minimize the incidence (Derks et al., 2004 and Al Maaitah et al., 2011).
The problem of root caries has been increasing in last decades as the an average life expectancy is rising. Due to progress of medicine and dentistry humans also maintain natural dentition longer. The aim of the study is to determine the effectiveness of photoactivated disinfection / photodynamic therapy / photodynamic antimicrobial therapy in elimination of cariogenic bacteria after manual root caries removal. If proved to be effective in eliminating bacteria from prepared cavity PAD could be incorporated in the protocol of treatment of root cavities.
Patient's salivary bacterial count will be evaluated , then the patient will bbe instructed to follow oral hygiene measures including the use of aloe vera toothpaste or fluoride toothpaste , the after 15 days and 30 days the patient's salivary bacterial count will be evaluated another time.
The study was to monitor effectiveness of glass ionomer sealant and resin-based sealant in ICDAS, and to evaluat the correlation between ICDAS and DIAGNOdent over 24 months. Over 200 8-year-old children with at least 2 permanent molar with the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) scores 0-4 were placed glass ionomer sealant and resin-based sealant split-mouthed randomly, and examined with ICDAS and DIAGNOdent before sealents placement and 6, 12 and 24 months after.
This is a randomized controlled trial of regular daily use of xylitol (or "birch sugar"), a natural sweetener that has antimicrobial properties, for the prevention of acute otitis media (AOM, primary outcome) as well as upper respiratory tract infections and dental caries (the two secondary outcomes) in preschool aged children. This trial will be conducted through the TARGet Kids! research network.
1. Three dentinal carious lesions will be chosen in this study and will be in the same patient. 2. Using local anaesthesia and rubber dam, the operative field will disinfected with 1% hypochlorite, and the dentine lesions should be exposed with a high-speed diamond bur by removing covering enamel. 3. Before the excavation dentine samples are collected for baseline bacteriological assessment . 4. Excavation will be carried out using new slow speed round burs and hand excavators. 5. The excavation end point of one cavity will be determined using visual tactile method. The two other cavities will be inspected with fluorescent camera or caries detector dye (CDD) methods to determine excavation endpoint respectively. 6. After excavation, dentine samples from the three cavities will be collected using a sterile excavator for the bacteriological assessment. - Number of visits & follow up period: all procedures will be done at the same visit and there is no follow up period. Direct benefit of the research to the human volunteer: to determine the excavation endpoint to ensure complete caries removal and prevent it's recurrence in the future. Scientific value and social benefits: to reach the best method to determine the excavation endpoint. Expected risk to the human subjects: the ordinary side effects associated with any restorative treatment and no of the study variable has side effect on the patient and in case of any side effect due to the restorative treatment, the participant will directly contact the operator.
In recent years restoring carious of fractured primary teeth with stainless steel crowns (SSC) has became more popular than ever. On the other hand the traditional operative approach of complete removal of caries is steadily losing support due to successful results with materials of high microleakage resistance. Treatment time and pain control in asymptomatic teeth has always been a problem in children. Hall technique is a minimally invasive treatment protocol that doesn't require local anesthesia, use of rotating devices for caries removal to restore primary teeth with SSC. But this protocol also raised questions in the scientific community about its possible effects on the dentition and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) for causing primary occlusal contact and increasing vertical dimension. The aim of our research is to study the effects of Hall technique's premature occlusal contact on TMJ.
The aim of this study is to assess the clinical effect of aPDT on deep caries in permanent teeth. Half of the deep caries will receive aPDT disinfect in restorative treatment procedure, while the other half will receive sodium 0.9% saline in restorative treatment procedure.
The aim of the study is to follow a group of preschool children from early permanent dentition to determine the prevalence and incidence of caries malocclusions and to investigated the related risk factors as age, gender, ethnic origin and non-nutritive sucking habits, breathing disturbances, allergies, Dietary habits, oral hygiene status and dental care.
The aim of the proposed study is to assess the clinical effect of photodynamic therapy (PDT) on dentin with carious lesions in primary teeth. Patients with primary molars exhibiting deep carious lesions on the occlusal surface indicated for restorative treatment will be randomly allocated to three groups: Group 1 - traditional caries removal with a low-speed drill; Group 2 - PDT + PapaMblue (carious tissue removal agent) modified with methylene blue; and Group 3 - PDT with methylene blue 0.05%. PDT will be performed with low-level laser for the treatment of the carious tissue. Dentin samples will be removed before and after PDT for microbiological analysis. The microbiological samples will be cultured in Brucella blood agar, Mitis Salibarius-bacitracin agar and Rogosa SL agar. The teeth will then be restored using high-viscosity glass ionomer cement, with clinical and radiographic follow up at six, 12 and 24 months. The data will be submitted to descriptive statistics.
