Promoting Early Diagnosis of Congenital Hearing Loss With Patient Navigators

Hearing loss is the most common sensory congenital disorder and this condition is diagnosable and treatable. Children that are born with hearing loss have to undergo several hearing tests to diagnose the condition and many families are delayed in receiving this testing or never obtain the needed testing. This research employs a new method for helping children with hearing loss receive timely care by using a patient navigator, who is someone who teaches and provides emotional/social support for the families of these children. The hypothesis of this study is that a patient navigator will hasten the timing of pediatric audiological testing, improve compliance with scheduled appointments, and expand parental knowledge of pediatric hearing loss.

Evaluation of Cogmed Working Memory Training for Adult Hearing Aid Users

A double-blind randomised active-controlled trial aims to assess whether Cogmed (adaptive) working memory training results in improvements in untrained measures of cognition, speech perception and self-reported hearing abilities in older adults (50-74 years) with mild-moderate hearing loss who are existing hearing aid users, compared with an active placebo Cogmed (non-adaptive) control. It is hypothesised that improvements on trained Cogmed tasks, representing increased working memory capacity, will result in improved performance on cognitive and speech perception tasks that engage working memory. We also measure self-reported hearing ability to assess self-perceived benefit of Cogmed training.

Spectral Dynamics and Speech Understanding by Hearing Impaired People

The purpose of this program of research is to understand the perception of the dynamic spectral properties of speech by hearing-impaired listeners, with the long-term goal of improving speech understanding by these individuals in adverse listening conditions. The proposed research compares the performance of normally-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners on measures of speech understanding in the presence of different types of signal distortion and speech understanding of signals with enhanced spectral dynamics. A computational model based on the amount of potential information available in speech will be used to quantify differences in speech intelligibility due to hearing status and stimulus characteristics.

Language Proficiency and Quality of Life After Receiving Cochlear Implantation as a Child

Treatment with cochlear implantation is now offered to proximately 95 % of children with deafness in Norway. More than 500 children have been operated at Oslo University Hospital. The study is a cross-sectional study aimed to investigate speech perception, language skills, quality of life in all childhood cochlear implant (CI) recipients in Norway from 1988-2012. Factors such as child characteristics, characteristics with the family, the cochlear implant, the rehabilitation situation, choice of communication mode, school and work situation are surveyed to see if these factors can be associated with variations in outcome. The study will include pre and post lingual deaf children and children with multiple disabilities. Participants are recruited and examined in conjunction with their annual CI control at the hospital. It will be conducted a series of tests determining listening, speech and language development, non-verbal intelligence. Questionnaires are used to collect background information and quality of life experience. The questionnaires include self-report forms for different age groups, and a parent report form. The patient will be tested for the most common genetic causes of deafness. Additional data will be collected from patient records and from local health register at Oslo University Hospital.
