Cervical posture is vital for normal swallowing function. Changes in cervical posture during swallowing alter the bolus flow and swallowing kinematics through changes in gravity and oropharyngeal space. The hyoid bone does not articulate with any bone, so it requires adequate tension of the hyolaryngeal complex and proper cervical postural alignment to maintain its stabilization and position. Changes in cervical posture and stabilization can cause changes in hyoid bone position and kinematics through muscles and ligaments which may lead to decrease in hyoid elevation, loss of optimal strength of the suprahyoid and infrahyoid muscles due to disrupted length-tension relationship, and an increased risk of aspiration due to insufficient laryngeal elevation. Further, deterioration in cervical posture and decreased stabilization resulting from cervical muscle weakness or/both endurance could affect the control and strength of masticatory muscles, tongue muscles and suprahyoid - infrahyoid muscles, which are involved in swallowing function. Whereby DCF weakness gives rise to inadequate cervical stabilization, change in hyoid bone stabilization, alterations in suprahyoid and infrahyoid muscle function, and decreased laryngeal elevation may adversely affect the normal function of the swallowing related muscles. Thus, decreased cervical stabilization, which is often seen in neurological diseases, may be related to neurogenic dysphagia. Given the known changes in cervical stabilization as a consequence of neurologic injury, the additional impact on swallowing or a potentially already neurologically-disordered swallow is considered. Thus, loss of cervical stabilization may be one of the factors affecting dysphagia in patients with neurological diseases providing more information on all potential factors contributing to swallow impairment, potentially leading to more targeted and effective swallowing interventions. However, there is no study investigating the role of the DCF muscles in dysphagia. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to comparison of deep cervical flexor muscle strength and endurance in patients with and without neurogenic dysphagia.
Physiotherapy is one of the most frequently used supportive treatments in intensive care units due to its positive effects on critically ill patients. Chest physiotherapy (GF), which constitutes the most effective part of the physiotherapy programs applied to intensive care patients under mechanical ventilation (MV) support, consists of a series of techniques aimed at clearing airway secretions, facilitating appropriate lung ventilation by increasing lung volume and respiratory muscle strength, and improving the respiratory system and gas exchange. . Of these techniques, manually applied percussion vibration and expiratory rib cage compression (EGCC) are some of the most commonly applied GF techniques in patients on MV support. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of chest physiotherapy techniques applied before aspiration on vital signs, blood gas values and amount of secretion in patients on mechanical ventilation support.
This clinical trial aims to compare the effect of the pericapsular nerve group (PENG) and suprainguinal fascia iliaca blocks (SIFIB) on pain management in elderly patients with subtrochanteric femur fractures. The participants will be patients determined to have proximal femoral nailing. According to randomisation, each participant will receive either PENG or SIFIB postoperatively after spinal anaesthesia. The investigator will measure postoperative pain scores, total amount of analgesic consumption and motor ability postoperatively.
This study (study type: cross-sectional) aims to investigate the relationship of sarcopenia level with balance, fear of falling and risk of falling in the elderly female population. In the first stage, 166 participants were divided into two groups: sarcopenia and non-sarcopenia. Afterwards, they were categorized according to sarcopenia level (probable sarcopenia group, sarcopenia group, severe sarcopenia group, group without sarcopenia) and comparisons were made between these subgroups. Then, they were evaluated with various scales and tests (in terms of balance, fear of falling and risk of falling).
Objective: This semi-experimental study was conducted to determine the effect of sleep hygiene education on sleep quality, pain, and depression in individuals with fibromyalgia. Patients and methods: A sample of 70 individuals with fibromyalgia (35 experimental, 35 control) were included in the study. Data was collected using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Visual Analog Scale, and the Beck Depression Inventory.
ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate whether the lactate dehydrogenase to albumin ratio can be used as a parameter to determine disease severity in Behçet's disease, an inflammatory disease, by comparing it to healthy controls. Patients and Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, patients with Behçet's disease aged 18-69 years who presented to the outpatient clinic between February 2020 and April 2023 and healthy individuals of similar age and gender were enrolled. LDH, albumin levels, and LDH/albumin ratio of both groups were compared. Clinical findings and characteristics of Behçet's patients and disease severity were recorded and analyzed in relation to LDH/albumin ratio.
Pneumothorax (PTX) is defined as the accumulation of air in the pleural space. PTX can cause a disruption in the perfusion of lung tissue in the affected area and increase intrathoracic pressure, potentially leading to obstruction of venous return and, consequently, posing a life-threatening condition. Therefore, PTX requiring urgent intervention is a significant concern in emergency departments. End-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) provides insight into carbon dioxide levels resulting from lung perfusion and serves as a respiratory parameter informing the prognosis of various critical illnesses. One of the most important factors determining lung perfusion is the effective lung area. Among the crucial issues for emergency departments are PTX cases, which typically regress following urgent intervention, leading to the establishment of an effective lung area. Hypotheses have been proposed in the literature suggesting that ETCO2 may be affected in PTX cases due to the relationship between effective lung area and ETCO2. In this study, investigetors aimed to investigate changes in ETCO2 levels following tube thoracostomy applied to PTX cases.
Earthquake is a disaster that causes physical, psychological, social, economic and cultural losses for individuals and affects/interrupts all age groups and normal life. Children are a group that is more affected by the earthquake than other members of the society and are exposed to its long-term effects. Children who have experienced earthquakes and continue to stay in the earthquake zone experience physical, economic, and social problems. In addition, the emotional and psychological development of these children is negatively affected. Due to the earthquake that occurred on 6 February 2023 affecting 11 provinces in our country, the needs in the field vary. After the acute period (first 1 month), children need psychological support. Problems that cannot be solved in the early period may cause health and behavioural problems in children in later ages and adulthood. In this context, approaching children with appropriate therapeutic communication methods positively affects their psychological well-being and directly affected physical resilience by enabling them to express their emotions. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of therapeutic communication programme on state and trait anxiety levels, psychological resilience, mental health and well-being of children aged 8-12 years affected by the earthquake. Hypotheses H1. After the therapeutic communication programme, children's State Anxiety Scale scores decrease. H2. After the therapeutic communication programme, children's Continuance Anxiety Scale scores decrease. H3. After the therapeutic communication programme, children's Me and My Emotions Scale scores decrease. H4. After the therapeutic communication programme, children's scores on the Child and Adolescent Psychological Resilience Scale increase.

A stronger OXTR immunoreactivity was detected in villous stroma of placenta of the natural birth group compared to the cesarean birth group. Reaction was not observed in syncytotrophoblast cells and syncytial nodes in both groups, but strong immunoreaction was observed fetal endothelial cells and fetal capillaries in both groups.
In shoulder rehabilitation, the inclusion of kinetic chain exercises is advocated in order to provide the necessary energy transfer to produce optimal force with minimal energy consumption. Closed kinetic chain (CKC) exercises are defined as exercises in which the distal segment is stabilized by encountering significant resistance while the proximal segment moves. In contrast, open kinetic chain (OKC) exercises allow the distal segment to move freely without any resistance. Recently, the importance of closed kinetic chain (CKC) exercises has increased in enhancing shoulder joint neuromuscular control by improving dynamic shoulder stability and joint position sense. The most current shoulder rehabilitation protocols include exercises for restoration of scapular muscle imbalances.There exist studies investigating the levels of scapular muscle activation during CKC exercises. Researchers have shown that most CKC exercises especially push-ups and plank variations with the shoulder in the 90° position, generally provide high SA activity and an optimal UT/SA ratio.In the literature, there is limited information on how the level of shoulder elevation affects scapular muscle activity and ratio during closed kinetic chain exercises in the prone position. To effectively prescribe CKC exercises commonly used in rehabilitation and athletic programs, a clear understanding of shoulder elevation changes muscle activity during these exercises is required. Our hypothesis is that glenohumeral joint elevation status will alter scapular muscle activation and activation rates.
