Soft Peri-implant Tissue Around Different Abutment Materials

Soft tissue attachment to the implant surface serves as a biological seal preventing the development of inflammatory periimplant diseases (i.e. peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis).It occurs in the presence of a biomaterial during healing of the surgical wound that might be influence by this foreign body. Myofibroblasts represent key players in the physiological reconstruction of connective tissue after injury. This work will focus on the role of myofibroblasts during the early phases of the healing process in peri-implant tissues around four different abutment materials.

Sufentanil NanoTab PCA System/15 mcg for Acute Post-Operative Pain in Vertebral Surgery: A Preliminary Investigation

The Zalviso® Sufentanil Sublingual Tablet System (SSTS) (Grünenthal Italia, Milan, Italy) is a patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) system approved in September 2015 by the European Commission for the management of acute moderate-to-severe pain in adult patients in a hospital setting. This preprogrammed drug/device combination product delivers a fixed dose of 15 mcg of sufentanil tablets as needed, in a non-invasive sublingual dosage form. Multimodal analgesia is defined as the administration, by one or more routes, of various analgesic medications with different mechanisms of action, thereby providing superior analgesia with fewer side effects. To improve pain control and patient satisfaction, patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) techniques have been developed, i.e. any delivery system which allows patients to self administer predetermined doses of analgesic drug to relieve pain. Over the past decades, intravenous (IV) PCA with morphine has been the gold standard for acute pain control. In our clinical practice, though, not only IV-PCA pumps were frequently prone to technical problems, but also patients and caregivers were not often able to understand or activate them, thus raising important safety issues and profoundly affecting the management of pain control. As a consequence, IV-PCA eventually fell into disuse, although no alternative has emerged until recently. The SSTS should go beyond the above-quoted limitations: it is a non invasive, patient-controlled and easy to use device, with an effective and safe opioid profile. It is, in our thinking, a promising technology. The aim of this retrospective analysis is to examine the role of the SSTS for management of pain after vertebral surgery, as part of a multimodal approach.

Effect of Tube Feeding on LCPUFAs Delivery

Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) docosahexaenoic (DHA) arachidonic acid (AA) are major building blocks for the lipid bilayer of neuronal and retinal membranes and play a crucial role in brain and visual development. Humans lack enzymes synthetizing DHA and AA precursors and thus rely upon dietary sources to achieve adequate intakes. Human milk (HM) feeding, either own mother's milk (OMM) or donor milk (DM), is the first nutritional choice for preterm infants and provides appropriate LCPUFAs amounts to support neurological and visual development of this fragile population. Due to their immaturity, preterm infants are often unable to coordinate sucking and swallowing, thus requiring tube feeding (TF) for prolonged time periods. During TF, fatty acids tend to separate from aqueous milk components and to adhere to the infusion set, thus reducing the delivery of HM lipid contents. To dare, however, a targeted evaluation of TF-related LCPUFAs losses has not been performed. This study aims to quantitatively assess, by means of gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, the effect of bolus and different continuous feeding methods routinely adopted for preterm infants' enteral nutrition on the delivery of DHA and AA contained in human milk samples.
