This study seeks to determine if increasing the dose of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) reduces 90-day all cause mortality in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients with severe acute renal failure (ARF).
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune inflammatory disorder that can cause substantial pain and joint tenderness, significant joint damage, and serious disability. The treatment goals are minimization of the signs and symptoms of the disease, and the reduction of irreversible joint damage. As the understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying RA is elucidated, the opportunity to target specific inflammatory processes with new therapies has improved. Rheumatoid arthritis is a T cell-mediated autoimmune disease and there are various therapies, including newer experimental therapies, which target either the activation of T cells or the neutralization of their effector mechanisms. These newer therapies have shown benefit in human and animal models of RA. Extracorporeal photoimmune therapy (ECP) has been shown to be safe and effective in the palliative treatment of the skin manifestations of cutaneous T cell lymphoma. Experimental studies have also demonstrated activity of ECP treatment in several T cell mediated diseases including graft versus-host disease, rejection after organ transplantation, and selected autoimmune diseases. This study will evaluate a cell-based therapy (ECP) in patients who have an inadequate response to disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and biological agents to determine if ECP treatment can reduce the signs and symptoms of RA in this refractory patient population.
The primary aim of the study is to compare the effects of the two blood glucose targets on 90 day all-cause mortality in Intensive Care patients who are predicted on admission to stay in the ICU for at least one full calendar day. The hypothesis is that there is little difference in the relative risk of death between patients assigned a glucose range of 4.5 - 6.0 mmol/L, and those assigned a glucose range of less than 10.0 mmol/L with insulin being infused if blood glucose exceeds 10.0 mmol/L, and adjusted when needed to maintain blood glucose of 8.0 - 10.0 mmol/L.
The purpose of this trial is to find out if a special website might help people discover if they have high cholesterol and then enable them to manage their cholesterol more appropriately. The primary aim of this trial is to determine the effects on consumers' use of cholesterol lowering therapy of an online service that provides automated, individually tailored, advice about eligibility for cholesterol lowering treatment. The primary null hypothesis being tested is that the service will result in no change in the use of cholesterol lowering treatments by consumers that use the service. The secondary aim of the trial is to see if it is possible to improve the cholesterol management of the friends or relatives of consumers that use the I-CAT service. The corresponding secondary null hypothesis being tested is that the I-CAT service will result in no change in the use of cholesterol lowering treatments by the friends or relatives of the consumers that use the service.
The objective of this study is to investigate the safety of intralesional (IL) PV-10 for the treatment of metastatic melanoma. This study will also include a preliminary assessment of response of treated and untreated lesions by clinical evaluation at follow-up of 12 to 24 weeks following IL PV-10 treatment.

This project is called “Falls Aren’t Us” and aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of a customised falls prevention program for people aged 60 and over who were presented to the hospital Emergency Department following a fall and being discharged home. Recruitment for this randomized controlled trial has commenced in late December 2002 from several major public hospitals in the western, southern, and northern parts of Melbourne Metropolitan Region. Consented participants will receive a comprehensive falls risk assessment within one week of being discharged home from the Emergency Department and at twelve month following this initial assessment. Their falls risks will be monitored for twelve months through a falls diary. Following randomization, participants in the intervention group will receive a customised falls prevention program in addition to the usual care being put in place from the hospital Emergency Department.
The aim of this project is to determine if a single dose of oral dexamethasone at the time of discharge from the emergency department (ED) [after successful treatment] prevents rebound headache. Hypothesis: That single dose oral dexamethasone 8mg reduces the proportion of patients who suffer rebound headache after treatment for migraine in the ED.
