Colorectal Cancer Control in Appalachian Churches

The purpose of this project is to conduct a community-based intervention and evaluate the independent and combined effects of two intervention strategies on primary and secondary prevention of colorectal cancer (CRC) among members of rural Appalachian churches. The sampling frame consists of all of the churches in a 7 county area of western West Virginia. Eligible churches will have at least 180 active members, will not share a common pastor, and will have no CRC control activities. Using a 2x2 experimental design, churches will be divided into two separate clusters, those with and without an existing parish nurse program. Then churches from each cluster will be randomized to one of two conditions, a natural helper or a control condition.

S0408: Capecitabine, Oxaliplatin, and Bevacizumab in Pts Undergoing Surgery for Liver Mets From Colorectal Cancer

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as capecitabine and oxaliplatin, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Monoclonal antibodies, such as bevacizumab, can block tumor growth in different ways. Some block the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Others find tumor cells and help kill them or carry tumor-killing substances to them. Bevacizumab may also stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking blood flow to the tumor. Giving capecitabine and oxaliplatin together with bevacizumab before and after surgery may be an effective treatment for liver metastases. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well giving capecitabine and oxaliplatin together with bevacizumab works in treating patients who are undergoing surgery for liver metastases due to colorectal cancer.

Safety and Efficacy of Targeted Gene Transfer in Colorectal Cancer Metastatic to Liver

This is a Phase I safety study of a gene transfer drug for colorectal cancer that has spread to the liver. The main purpose of this study is to determine if it is safe to give this new intervention to persons with cancer, but we will also look for indications that the drug is effective. Although the findings in animals that have cancer are encouraging, this is the first time humans will receive this experimental gene transfer drug. A gene called cyclin G1 has been shown to play a very important part in cancer growth. In animal experiments, a genetically modified virus (or vector)carrying a modified cyclin G1 gene caused the cancerous tumors to grow much slower or even die. In this safety study, the drug will be injected through the liver artery to get it near the cancer that has spread to the liver. The way the gene gets into the cancer cells is by using a targeted vector that concentrates in the area of the cancer to improve the delivery of the killing gene into cancer cells. The vector we are using is a virus that has been changed so that the infectious genes have been removed and instead carries the modified cyclin G1 gene.

Monoclonal Antibody Therapy and Colony- Stimulating Factor in Treating Patients With Metastatic Colorectal Cancer

RATIONALE: Monoclonal antibodies can locate tumor cells and either kill them or deliver tumor-killing substances to them without harming normal cells. Colony-stimulating factors such as G-CSF may increase the number of immune cells found in bone marrow or peripheral blood, and may help a person's immune system kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of monoclonal antibody therapy plus G-CSF in treating patients with metastatic colorectal cancer that has not responded to treatment with fluorouracil.
