Multimodal Narcotic Limited Perioperative Pain Control With Colorectal Surgery

The General Objective of this study is to investigate the cost and efficacy of treating patients undergoing colorectal surgical resections with an opioid limited pain control regimen as part of an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Protocol. This group will be compared to a traditional opioid based pain control regimen.

3-day vs. 1-day Low Residue Diet Influence in Colonoscopy Preparation and Patient Tolerability

Colonoscopy is one of the most common methods for the diagnosis and treatment of lower gastrointestinal tract diseases and provides a unique opportunity to identify early neoplastic lesions. Adequate bowel preparation is important for optimal colonoscopy. New bowel-cleansing regimens, study of patient-related risk factors to fail a proper preparation and diet adaptations have been studied recently. A low residue diet is the standard in the day before the colonoscopy. Some endoscopists prescribe this dietary plan for a 3-day period prior to the exam, although no study compared the recommended 1-day versus 3-day diet regime, or the influence in bowel preparation results. The aim of this project is to determine if the use of a 3-day low residue diet improves bowel preparations results and the influence in patient tolerability and adherence.

Study on Aspirin Versus Placebo in Resected Colon Cancer With PI3K Mutation Stage III or II High Risk

Four retrospective studies were recently published on efficacy of aspirin in patients with surgically resected colon cancer. Two of these studies strongly suggested that aspirin used in low doses (100 mg/d) after surgical resection of colorectal cancer with PI3K mutation could act as a targeted therapy with a major protective effect on the risk of recurrence. The other two studies did not confirm the benefit of aspirin in this situation. These four retrospective studies provide an insufficient level of evidence to demonstrate the benefit of low-dose aspirin as adjuvant to surgery for colorectal cancer. Therefore, it is necessary as recommended in the conclusion of these studies and meta-analyses to perform a randomised prospective study to validate these data.

Combination Chemotherapy With or Without Atezolizumab in Treating Patients With Stage III Colon Cancer and Deficient DNA Mismatch Repair

This phase III trial studies combination chemotherapy and atezolizumab to see how well it works compared with combination chemotherapy alone in treating patients with stage III colon cancer and deficient deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) mismatch repair. Drugs used in combination chemotherapy, such as oxaliplatin, leucovorin calcium, and fluorouracil, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells, by stopping them from dividing, or by stopping them from spreading. Immunotherapy with monoclonal antibodies, such as atezolizumab, may help the body's immune system attack the cancer, and may interfere with the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Giving combination chemotherapy with atezolizumab may work better than combination chemotherapy alone in treating patients with colon cancer.
