NCT ID: NCT00229892 Terminated - Cardiac Surgery Clinical Trials

Incisions for Cardiac Surgery

Start date: February 2005
Phase: N/A
Study type: Observational

The purpose is to evaluate the investigators' length of incisions based on patient weight, operative times, hospital lengths of stay, pain medicine requirements, complications and costs. These data will lead to a new minimally invasive standard of care without a reduction in outcomes.

NCT ID: NCT00176657 Terminated - Clinical trials for Cardiopulmonary Bypass

The Use of HEMOBAG to Salvage Blood After Cardiac Surgery

Start date: September 2004
Phase: Phase 2
Study type: Interventional

The avoidance of blood transfusions benefits the patient. Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is routinely used in complex cardiac surgeries. This device requires circulating blood through an oxygenator and pump while the heart is stopped. Upon discontinuation of CPB, the volume of blood in the CPB circuit, approximately 1 to 1.5 liters, is currently processed for the red cell components of the blood. Yet, all the other blood components are available in this volume of blood, but are discarded. The Hemobag filters allow for whole blood reinfusion rather than just red cell reinfusion. Thus, the patient’s own platelets, for example, are returned to the patient. The product is just being used clinically and we, the investigators at University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey, have been asked to perform a study on our normal practice (red blood cell return as described above) compared to the whole blood return available with the Hemobag™.

NCT ID: NCT00027001 Completed - Depressive Disorder Clinical Trials

Qigong Therapy For Heart Device Patients

Start date: September 2000
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The goal of this study is to improve the overall physical health and quality of life of patients attached to mechanical heart devices while awaiting heart transplantation. Qigong, an ancient Chinese exercise that involves active participation of the individual in the form of meditation, breathing exercises and simple physical movements, is used in combination with a structured exercise program. We are testing the hypotheses that Qigong, in combination with a structured exercise program that combines aerobic and resistance training will improve the cardiovascular health and improve the quality of life of patients on mechanical heart devices. To test these hypotheses, we are measuring cardiovascular function and quality of life parameters in patients attached to mechanical heart devices who have participated in the exercise program and have practiced Qigong, and comparing these measures to patients who participated in the exercise program, but did not practice Qigong. Information gained from this research will serve as a basis from which the application of exercise training and Qigong can be applied to the treatment of other chronic diseases in which the physical conditioning and/or quality of life of individuals is compromised.

NCT ID: NCT00011310 Completed - Clinical trials for Respiratory Tract Diseases

Cardiopulmonary Effects of Particulate Exposure

Start date: March 1999
Phase: N/A
Study type: Observational

The aim of this study is to assess cardiac rate and respiratory responses and rhythm after workplace exposure to combustion particulates. A repeated measurement study is being performed on acute boilermakers (apprentices and journeymen). A stratified analysis is then done on those with and without chronic bronchitis, after adjustment for relevant covariates.
