Filter by:The study examines the efficacy and safety of Analgecine in the treatment of chronic pain in patients with low back pain for 3 months after surgical treatment. It is a randomized, placebo-controlled, double blind, multi-center phase III clinical trial. Patients with chronic low back pain for 3 months after surgical treatment is recruited (age between 18 and 70; pain visual analysis scale (VAS) between 3 and 8). After randomization, subjects are divided into 3 groups: 1) Treatment with Analgecine (Experiment group); 2) Treatment with Neurotropin (positive control group); 3) Placebo group. Subjects will be undergone 4 measurement time points on day 0, 7, 14, and 21. In each time points, subjects are required to score their pain with pain VAS and to have regular blood, urine, and renal/liver function tests. The changes of the pain VAS at day 21 are compared between groups.
The impact of statin use on response to epidural steroid injections remains unknown and may well increase the effect considering the substantial anti-inflammatory properties. We thus tested the primary hypothesis that patients taking statins before and after the procedure will have lower VAS scores compared to patients not on statins. Secondarily we tested the hypothesis that statin users will have improved quality of life evaluated with Short Form 36 (SF 36).
The overall objective of this study is to develop and test an efficient set of self-report instruments to measure Complementary and Alternative Medicine(CAM)-relevant contextual factors important in healing. The initial phase of the study involves developing and refining an item bank. During the initial 'item bank development' phase, the investigators will run focus groups and cognitive interviews with individuals who participate in CAM and conventional medicine interventions. The next step of instrument development is called Calibration, and involves administering the revised item bank to an internet sample and to persons who receive services in a CAM clinic and a conventional primary care setting. The items will be calibrated using item response theory and classical test theory. This will result in a computerized adaptive testing version of the instrument, as well as a static short form of the instrument. This current protocol in ClinicalTrials.gov pertains only to the final, Validation Phase of the study. The final phase of the project will involve conducting initial validation studies of the set of instruments. The set of instruments will be called the Healing Encounters and Attitudes Lists (HEAL). The investigators will evaluate the convergent, discriminant, and predictive validity of the HEAL instruments in a sample of 200 persons with chronic low back pain or neck pain who are receiving physical therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, medical management, or mindfulness-based stress reduction. For convergent validity, the HEAL is expected to display moderate to large correlations with measures of similar constructs. The HEAL is expected to correlate modestly with self-report measures of general psychosocial functioning, in support of discriminant validity. Finally, HEAL scores should account for a significant proportion of the variance in treatment outcome, supporting predictive validity.
The purpose of this study is to assess neck and low back pain using Electrical Impedance Myography (EIM) in order to develop an algorithm to aid primary care providers (PCPs) in the diagnosis of neck/back pain. Secondary goals include the refinement of EIM technology and associated software of ease-of-use and interpretation by PCPs and staff.
Placebo and nocebo responses have mainly been studied in healthy humans for pharmacological rather than psychological interventions. Moreover, only few studies examined patients or tested how previous experience and attitudes affect placebo and nocebo responses. On the psychological level expectancy and classical conditioning have been identified as two primary mechanisms. Both seem to be important with classical conditioning potentially having more long-term effects and expectancy being more important in nocebo effects. There is some initial evidence from the investigators own research that patients may be more prone to these effects and the investigators have also shown that placebo effects may last up to several years after treatment. The investigators therefore examine previous attitudes to pharmacological interventions for chronic pain in patients with chronic back pain and subdivide them into groups with high of low belief in the respective treatment modality. The investigators then apply a pharmacological placebo and study the interaction between the prevailing attitude (implicit and explicit) and the placebo effect with respect to pain perception but also to neurobiological mechanisms using functional magnetic resonance imaging. In addition to expectancy, conditioning of placebo will be examined and the long-term effects of the intervention will be determined.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of the Kyrobak continuous passive motion home-use device in relieving low back pain, improving proprioception (balance and fall prevention) and improving the symmetry of muscle function on either side of the spine.
Sciatica is a common pain problem that affects not only the patient but also constitutes a socioeconomic burden and thus affects the whole society. So far, current pharmacologic therapies are inadequate for many patients. Therefore, we evaluated application of high-tone external muscle stimulation (HTEMS) compared to transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on radicular pain associated with sciatica.
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the changes in back pain from access to a sit-stand workstation. Other muscle and joint pain and/or discomfort will also be evaluated. We hypothesize that access to a sit-stand workstation will allow one to experience postural variation and reduce back pain.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether individual cognitive functional therapy (CFT), when compared to group exercise classes is effective in reducing pain and disability in patients with non-specific chronic low back pain.
The aims of this study are to investigate whether pelvic pain and low back pain disability are associated with postpartum depression and to compare the prevalence between women without Low back pain and disability and women with Low Back Pain (LBP) and disability every trimester, and correlate postpartum Depression and some clinical and biopsychosocial variables: subgroups of LBP, disability, pain intensity, pain widespread and nationality, in a cohort of Spanish women at 2 months postpartum.
