Filter by:Low back pain and sciatica is a common condition resulting in high costs and disability for society and affected individuals. Presently there is a lack of evidence for what treatments may help this condition early in the course of care. Improved early management could reduce risks for persistent disability and high costs. The goal of this project is to examine the clinical outcomes and costs associated with adding a physical therapy program to early management of patients with low back pain and sciatica within primary care.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of a treatment involving the application of lidocaine injected on the low back area for pain control. The study will compare this form of treatment with other options such as physical exercises or pain killer medication, different measurements are going to be used to quantify the response to each of these treatments.
This clinical pilot trial will investigate the effects of technology-supported exercise therapy for chronic non-specific low back pain. Patients will follow an intensive rehabilitation program (2x/week for 18 weeks), with emphasis on motor control training that is supported by technology. The technological system consists out of motion tracking sensors that register the movements and position of the lumbar spine.

A Multicenter, Randomized, Double-blinded, Parallel, Active-controlled, Phase III Clinical Trial to Evaluate the Efficacy and Safety of DW-330SR2 and Pelubiprofen in Chronic Back Pain Patients.
This is study testing the feasibility of collecting neurophysiological measures of outcome related to body-based interventions for low back pain. The investigators will collect fMRI and psychophysical data about pain sensitivity before and after the interventions. Participants will be randomly assigned to either spinal manipulation or therapeutic touch groups. Participants will attend two practice sessions prior to the first data collection. There will be two follow-up assessments.
Aim: The aim of this project is to identify chronic low back pain patients´ beliefs about the origin and meaning of pain for developing a biopsychosocial web-based educational intervention. The other aim of this project is to assess the effectiveness of this web-based educational intervention for chronic low back pain patients on pain cognitions, pain intensity, and disability. Methods: Mixed methods design, combining both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. For the qualitative part of this study, the investigators will use qualitative in-depth semi-structured interviews. For the quantitative phase we will use an experimental study design. Subjects: Chronic low back pain patients between 18-65 years old, attending a primary care setting in the city of Lleida. Expected outcomes: The investigators expect to change and modify chronic low back pain patients´ cognition by using our web-site educational intervention, with the further outcome of reducing pain and disability.
The purpose of this 52-week open label study is to determine the long-term safety of a new opioid molecule, NKTR-181, in patients with moderate to severe chronic low back pain or chronic non-cancer pain.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether a new opioid molecule, NKTR-181, is effective for the relief of moderate to severe chronic low back pain as compared to a placebo.
Purpose and Aims: The purpose of this study is to assess the clinical effectiveness of back and core exercise interventions for low back injury prevention in firefighters. Aim 1. Compare the effectiveness of 2 worksite exercise interventions (supervised, web-based) relative to control to reduce lost work days related to low back injury and illness in firefighters. Relevance: Low back injury is one of the most common and disabling disorders in firefighters. Thus, novel interventions are needed to counteract the adverse consequences of this disorder and its impact on firefighter safety. Methods: A cluster randomized controlled trial will be conducted in career, full active duty firefighters (n = 345) who will be randomly assigned (by fire station) to 1 of 3 intervention groups - 1) supervised exercise (n = 115), 2) web-based exercise (n = 115), or 3) control (n = 115). Participants in the supervised and web-based exercise groups will perform back and core exercises previously tested in our recent FEMA-funded grant (EMW-2009-FP-00418), twice per week for 12 months while on duty, in addition to their usual physical fitness routine - The supervised group will perform exercise under direct supervision of certified exercise specialists, and the web-based group will utilize a web-based exercise system. The control group will not perform back and core exercises, but will continue their usual physical fitness routine and receive brief education on general exercise and physical activity principles. Outcome measures include low back injury and illness data obtained and cross-checked from various sources, other standard clinical outcome measures for low back pain and disability, and validated physical fitness tests. Anticipated Outcomes: We hypothesize that the supervised and web-based interventions will reduce lost work days related to low back injury and illness by 40% compared with control. Assuming positive results, this study will deliver an evidence-based exercise intervention for low back injury prevention specifically designed for firefighters and assessed in a full-scale randomized controlled trial.
