Filter by:The purpose of this study is to determine the conducting ability of distal extremity nerves after a supraclavicular brachial plexus nerve block (with local anesthetic) has been placed at a more proximal location in the upper extremity.
This study is designed to compare the efficacy of endotracheal tube cuffs pre-filled with alkalinized lidocaine on the: - incidence of coughing during emergence of general anesthesia - time needed for emergence following a desflurane-based anesthesia - incidence of sore throat after extubation. The investigator's hypothesis is that the use of endotracheal tube cuffs pre-filled with alkalinized lidocaine will reduce the incidence of coughing by 50% relative to a control group following a desflurane-based anesthesia.

Newly developed algorithms can, in real-time: 1) predict cardiovascular collapse well ahead of any clinically significant changes in standard vital signs, 2) monitor and estimate fluid resuscitation needs, 3) estimate acute blood loss volume, and 4) estimate intracranial pressure. The investigators hypothesize that these same methods can be used to predict functional hypovolemia during regional anesthesia for labor or fetal intervention.
