Filter by:Healthy but sedentary aging leads to increased morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular disease. This is partly due to the accumulation of Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGEs) and the stiffening of the myocardium and arteries. New medication has been developed to break these AGE-crosslinks to improve cardiovascular compliance. The positive influence of regular physical activity is well known for cardiovascular disease and aging. Therefore, what is the most effective intervention, physical exercise and/or new medication AGE-crosslink breakers, in improving the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular compliance and improving the endothelial function in healthy sedentary elderly.
Groups of naturally occurring compounds called flavonoids are found in foods such as fruits and vegetables, red wine, tea, dark chocolate and cocoa products. Diets rich in flavonoids are associated with decreased risk for cardiovascular disease and major cardiovascular events (i.e. myocardial infarction) and have been shown to improve blood pressure, insulin sensitivity, and vascular function in a variety populations (Type II diabetes, elderly, smokers, etc.). The presumed beneficial effects of these compounds are thought to act through their inherent ability to scavenge free radicals. Specifically flavonoids scavenge superoxide anions which are free radicals that react with nitric oxide (NO) to produce peroxynitrite. The formation of peroxynitrite ultimately reduces the bioavailability of NO which is essential for vasodilation and thus vascular health and function. Normal aging is associated with impaired endothelial function, which presumably is due to less than optimal levels of NO bioavailability. Therefore, interventions that can increase NO bioavailability would be expected to improve microvascular function and vascular health in this population. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of dietary flavonoid supplementation on the vasodilatory capacity of the cutaneous vasculature, as well as on cerebral vascular reactivity and arterial stiffness in young and old humans. This study will test the hypothesis that acute dietary flavonoid treatment will improve impaired cutaneous vasodilatory capacity, cerebral vasomotor reactivity, and reduce arterial stiffness in older but not young humans.
The investigators hypothesize that age-related changes in the number and growth dynamics of ovarian follicles will be associated with changes in hormone levels and corresponding changes in musculoskeletal health.
The study purpose is to evaluate efficacy of a mindfulness training intervention and learn about cognitive and physiological markers of stress.
The general hypothesis is that elderly have diminished nutritive flow to skeletal muscle and impaired capacity for building muscle. In aging populations, this decreased ability to build muscle may represent a tipping point in the progression towards chronic physical frailty and disability. The goal is to examine whether novel pharmacologic therapies can improve nutritive blood flow to the muscles and muscle building in the elderly. The purpose of this study is 1) to determine if losartan administration will enhance blood flow and 2) to determine if N-acetylcysteine (NAC) will enhance blood flow. The investigators will study community dwelling, healthy older men and women (60-85 years). Subjects will be randomized to one of three groups: Experimental Group 1: Placebo losartan and placebo N-acetylcysteine (NAC). Experimental Group 2: losartan (25mg/dose) and placebo N-acetylcysteine (NAC). Experimental Group 3: N-acetylcysteine (NAC) (50 mg/kg/dose) and placebo Subjects will admit to the clinic on day 1 of the study. Baseline testing consisting of leg blood flow (LBF), contrast enhanced ultrasound, handgrip testing and fatigue questionnaires. After testing is completed the subjects will recieve their first dose of NAC/ losartan/ placebo with dinner. Subjects will be fasted after 10 pm. On day 2, leg blood flow (LBF) will be measured approximately 12 hours post dose 1. Subjects will receive their second dose of NAC/ losartan/ placebo. Leg blood flow will be measured 1 hour and 2 hours post dose 2 of study interventions. The subjects will eat a meal and receive their third dose of the study intervention. Leg blood flow will be repeated at 1 hour and 2 hours post dose 3. Appoximately 30 minutes after dose 3 of the study intervention, handgrip testing will be performed and fatigue questionnaires completed.
This is a randomized, multicentre, and parallel clinical trial with blinded to evaluator. The principal hypothesis is that whole-body vibration training plus exercise improves the body balance and prevents falls more than only exercise training in institutionalized older people. The number needed of patients is 160 (80 per group).

Background: - Older persons are often referred to physicians because of mobility difficulties that grow worse as they age. To better understand the reasons for mobility difficulties in older persons, researchers conducted a population-based study of individuals living in the Chianti geographic area of Tuscany, Italy. Researchers are now interested in conducting a follow-up study on the original participants to assess the effects of aging on their mobility. Objectives: - To conduct a follow-up study on the participants in the mobility study of older persons in the Greve in Chianti and Bagno a Ripoli areas near Florence, Italy. Eligibility: - Original participants in the InChianti Mobility Study. Design: - The InChianti Follow-up Study will repeat most elements of the baseline evaluation from the original study. Participants will be seen on the 3-year anniversary of their baseline study assessment. - Participants will have a home interview with questions about their physical and mental health, family history, daily activities, and living conditions related to their continued mobility. - Participants will provide blood and urine samples, and will have tests of heart and motor nerve function and imaging studies of bones and the circulatory system. - Participants will also have a functional evaluation of their motor skills, including walking tests, range of motion tests, and grip strength.
The purpose of this study is to see whether people who have restricted the number of calories they eat for a long period of time, compared to normal-eating and obese people, have markers of cellular aging that look younger.
Hearing loss is one of the most common health concerns affecting 1 in 3 Americans over 60 years of age rising to 1 in 2 for those over 85 years old. Contributions to hearing abilities provided by cognitive and memory processes are universally recognized as essential to adequate speech communication, but these processes are not well understood. Cognitive limitations in the ability to rapidly process sequential sounds occur with all listeners but may have more impact on older Veterans with and without hearing impairment. The purpose of this study is to examine and more thoroughly characterize the change in auditory working memory with hearing loss and increasing age. Young and older listeners with and without hearing loss will listen and report on two target sounds embedded in a stream of rapidly occurring sound. The investigators expect that older listeners without hearing loss will have more difficulty than young listeners but that older listeners with hearing impairment will have the most difficulty with this task even when the sounds they are listening to are adjusted to compensate for their hearing loss.
