Filter by:The use of topical beta-blockers, such as 0.25% timolol, in promoting wound healing is currently emerging in the academic literature. The investigators will enroll 114 patients who have their skin cancer surgically removed resulting in open surgical wounds less or equal to 1.5 cm. The objective of this randomized safety study is to determine the safety and efficacy of 0.25% timolol in promoting wound healing in open surgical wounds less or equal to 1.5 cm.
This study is aimed at assessing the survival benefit potentially associated with CT scans for trauma patients in an urban lower-middle income setting.
Most people with moderate or severe TBI have difficulty returning to their usual social roles and activities. The OBIA has developed a program where peers (other individuals living with TBI) coach or mentor those with more recent brain injury. The objective of this project is to evaluate the feasibility of measuring the impact of the OBIA Peer Program on social participation and mood compared to a control group who have not received peer support yet. The proposed study will involve three phases. It will begin with a qualitative component (stakeholder interviews), then a pilot RCT, and end with more interviews to explore the success of the study intervention. A qualitative descriptive approach will be used at these first and last phases of the study. In Phase 1, interviews will be conducted with approximately 15 participants including individuals with moderate to severe TBI, caregivers, Mentors, OBIA staff members, and health researchers. The proposed Phase 2 will be a clinical trial, conducted with 60 participants. These participants will be randomized to one of three groups: a twice a week Program (n=20), a once a week Program (n=20), or the wait list control group (n=20). For Phase 3, a sub group of approximately 25 participants from Phase 2 who participated in the OBIA Peer Support Program will be asked to participate in a one-on-one, telephone/Skype interview. A sub-group of Mentors will also be asked to participate in a one-on-one, telephone/Skype interview. This research project will address the highest priority areas of "strategies to enhance social participation and community life (personal relationships)" and "psychological strategies to improve mood, depression, and irritability", as identified in the ONF's Request for Proposals on "Addressing Evidence Gaps in Moderate to Severe TBI Rehabilitation". The study will provide important results to inform a RCT (of appropriate size) on the impact of peer support on the social participation and mood of individuals with moderate to severe TBI. This study will then provide the best evidence to support the recommendation on "a peer-supported relationship model of intervention", and inform future versions of the INESSS-ONF Guideline.
The objectives of this study is to determine the immediate and 10 minutes follow-up effects of a warm-up based on a continous run on a treadmill or the application of a hot-pack in athletes with previous hamstring injury. The investigators have as an hypothesis that the subjects, after one of this interventions show statistically significant improvements in the measurements of pain, flexibility, proprioception and postural control
Possover pioneered a minimally invasive and fully reversible laparoscopic technique, laparoscopic implantation of neuroprosthesis (LION), for precise placement of an implantable pulse generator and one to four leads for stimulating nerves of the lumbosacral plexus. Unexpectedly, Possover in 2014 made the clinical observation that four patients with complete and incomplete chronic traumatic spinal cord injury regained significant motor and sensory function following the LION procedure for bladder and bowel dysfunction. The primary objective of this randomized clinical trial is to investigate whether the LION procedure and the subsequent neurostimulation in individuals with chronic traumatic thoracolumbar spinal cord injury with spastic paraplegia is associated with increased walking capacity.
A two-arm, parallel group, multicentre, single-blind, randomized controlled trial comparing electrical neuromodulation delivered by MyndMove® therapy to intensive upper-limb conventional therapy in the treatment of patients with moderate to severe motor impairment to their arms and hands from an incomplete, traumatic spinal cord injury.
The skin plays a critical role in protection where it acts as a barrier from damage and pathogens between the external and internal environments. Wounds compromise its protective role by disrupting the function and the normal structure of the skin and the underlying soft tissue. As a response to injury wound healing occurs in order to rapidly restore the defect. This process involves activation of keratinocytes, fibroblasts, endothelial cells, macrophages, and platelets and consists of multiple phases including hemostasis, inflammation, migration and cellular proliferation, and maturation and remodeling. A simplified schematic of the course of wound healing is depicted in Figure 2. Hemostasis occurs immediately after dermal injury. The inflammation phase is characterized by cellular recruitment and increased vascular permeability. The epithelization phase is achieved by proliferation of basal cells and migration of epithelial cells. The last phase is known as the maturation and remodeling phase where collagen cross-linking and remodeling, wound contraction, and repigmentation takes place. Due to the broad involvement of various cell types, extracellular matrix and many reactive molecules each phase in wound healing produces characteristic changes within the tissue. A deficiency in any part of the process can lead to delayed wound healing, abnormal scar formation or chronic wounds. To study wound healing in healthy volunteers a challenge model with skin punch biopsies has been described in literature previously. However, the characterization of this model was not performed comprehensively since advanced analysis of biopsies were omitted. Furthermore, analyses performed in previous studies only partially described wound healing processes either by insufficient time points for characterization or scarce simultaneous evaluations of multiple wound healing modalities. The overall aim of this study is to develop a standardized model to temporarily and locally induce a skin trauma to investigate wound healing and monitor wound closure. This clinical model will enable future application as proof-of-pharmacology and proof-of concept studies as well as drug profiling in early drug development programs. More specifically, the objective of the trial is to explore and characterize the induction of well-defined skin trauma and natural wound healing process over the course of the different phases using a battery of dermatological assessments after skin punch biopsies in healthy volunteers. Furthermore, safety and tolerability will be assessed. Characterization and monitoring of wound healing effects following skin punch biopsies will be performed by means of biophysical, biochemical, imaging, clinical parameters and subject reported outcomes.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) represents a serious complication following severe injury associated with adverse outcome. Main goals of the presented study were to define the incidence of AKI and to evaluate the validity of AKI biomarker neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) in AKI prediction in severely injured patients. Secondary goals were to determine the time-dependent role of injury-related tissue hypoxia, systemic inflammatory response, and rhabdomyolysis in the pathophysiology of AKI.
The study will investigate the effect of structural training program and body composition on injury occurrence in hip-hop dance. Assuming that training program can significantly lower the number of injuries (experimental group will have less injuries during and at the end of the trial) and that body fat percentage negatively effects injury occurrence (dancers with higher body fat percentage will be more often injured).
