Facilitating Follow-Up Adherence for Abnormal Pap Smears

Objective: Previous studies have suggested that psycho-educational interventions delivered by telephone improve adherence to initial colposcopy after an abnormal Pap smear. To further explore strategies for enhanced follow-up to medical care recommendations, we studied the impact of a theory-guided cognitive-affective barriers counseling intervention, delivered at 2-4 weeks before the colposcopy appointment, for inner city women. The comprehensive telephone barriers intervention was compared to an enhanced comparison group and a group that received tailored print materials. Methods: Participants (N = 211) were recruited through a colposcopy clinic and randomly assigned to: 1) telephone assessment of barriers to follow up adherence recommendations combined with tailored telephone barriers counseling; 2) telephone assessment combined with tailored barriers print brochure; or 3) telephone assessment with no barriers counseling. Participants were assessed at baseline, 1-week, 9 and 15 months post-colposcopy.

Study With Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy With Cisplatin to Treat Stage I-IVA Cervical Cancer

The purpose of this study is to find out whether patients with cervical cancer treated with IMRT have less side effects with equal cancer control compared to standard radiation techniques. With standard radiation techniques, normal pelvic organs near the tumor receive radiation dose, which leads to side effects. IMRT is a new radiation technique that can reduce radiation dose to these organs and may reduce side effects. Compared to conventional RT techniques, the hypothesis is that IMRT will reduce acute hematologic and gastrointestinal toxicity for cervical cancer patients treated with concurrent cisplatin.

Cervix Hypoxia FAZA

The purpose of this study is to look for low levels of oxygen (hypoxia) in your cervix cancer using a special x-ray test called a positron emission tomography (PET)scan. Hypoxia may have an effect on how cervix cancer grows and responds to treatments like radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Doctors at Princess Margaret Hospital have measured hypoxia in over 300 patients. The use of PET scans to measure hypoxia may be better and simpler than the methods used previously.

Tissue and Plasma Biomarkers of Lymph Node Involvement in Cervical Cancer

The purpose of this study is to measure the levels of serum proteins and other biomarkers in cervical cancer patients. We believe that some of these markers may be useful in selecting patients for specific types of cancer therapies. Cervical Cancer Screening Among Hispanic Women

In this study, 400 Hispanic women will be recruited and randomized to one of three interventions: 1. Control (no change); 2. A low-intensity information program, consisting of a video approach educating women on the importance of cervical cancer screening; 3. A higher intensity program consisting of the video plus a 'promotora' or lay-community health educator led intervention at the participant's home to encourage cervical cancer screening. The purpose of this study is to develop and implement a community based preventive healthcare model using cervical cancer screening as the target medical intervention. The investigators will first conduct 2 pilot studies to refine their preventive healthcare model based on the principles of community based participatory research (1000 participants). The investigators will then apply the model to screen 9000 women for cervical cancer over a period of 7-9 days. This 10,000 patient trial will explore the ability of a community to conduct their own screening program to identify who needs medical intervention based on self-collection and centralized high-throughput low cost human papillomavirus (HPV) testing.
