The primary objective of this trial is to evaluate the safety and tolerability of long-term Phenoptin treatment in subjects with PKU.
The primary objective is to evaluate the degree and frequency of response to Phenoptin™ (sapropterin dihydrochloride), as demonstrated by a reduction in blood phenylalanine (Phe) level among subjects with phenylketonuria (PKU) who have elevated Phe levels. A secondary objective of this study is to evaluate the safety of Phenoptin™ treatment in this subject population, and identify individuals in this subject population who respond to Phenoptin™ treatment with a reduction in blood Phe level.

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a rare genetic condition. If not treated, PKU can cause severe mental retardation. Women with PKU are advised to eat a special diet when pregnant to prevent mental retardation in their children. This study will evaluate the effects of that diet on the children of mothers with PKU.
OBJECTIVES: I. Assess the impact of a phenylalanine restricted diet during pregnancy on symptoms in offspring of patients with phenylketonuria.
