Study to Evaluate the Safety and Effectiveness of MRgFUS Compared With Myomectomy for the Treatment of Uterine Fibroids

The objective of this trial is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of ExAblate for the treatment of uterine fibroids. Women, seeking treatment for symptomatic uterine leiomyomata will be eligible for the study.Women who agree to participate will sign an informed consent and will be randomized to ExAblate treatment or myomectomy. All patients will be followed through the 36 month visit. Follow-up visits/telephone calls will be completed at 1 week, 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6, 12, 18, 24 and 36 months post treatment. Patients will be evaluated by assessing their overall physical and mental health as well as for device/procedure related adverse events.

Hybrid Transvaginal-Transabdominal Endoscopic Surgery

The is a pilot study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of hybrid transvaginal-transabdominal procedures. Diagnostic peritoneoscopy (visualizing the inside of the abdomen), appendectomy (removal of the appendix), and cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder) will be performed through a vaginal incision with an additional small incision in the umbilicus.

Transvaginal Diagnostic Study in Women With Pelvic Pain

We propose a phase I study of laparoscopic assisted, transvaginal peritoneoscopy by using flexible endoscopy in female patients with pelvic pain. It is designed as a hybrid procedure with laparoscopy using one port for adequate safety with the ultimate goal in the future that transvaginal NOTES can replace therapeutic pelviscopy for this indication. The standard number of port sites for diagnostic laparoscopy is 2-3. By reducing the number and size of laparoscopic port, patients should already experience benefits from this hybrid procedure.
