Validation of the Spanish Version of the Neck Disability Index

The primary purpose of this study is to adapt the Neck Disability Index (NDI)and the Cervical Core Set 6 (CCS6) to the Spanish population. Other objectives are to determine the correlation between intensity of cervical pain, degree of disability, and quality of life; to determine the correlation between the NDI, CCS6 and the Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire; and to determine factors that predict the chronification of disability.

Effectiveness of Cervical Facet Joint Nerve Blocks

1. To demonstrate whether: i. Facet joint nerve blocks have therapeutic value beyond the duration of local anesthetic effect. ii. Adjuvant medications (Sarapin and Depo-Medrol) provide additional relief of cervical facet joint pain when used with facet joint nerve blocks. 2. To demonstrate whether or not there are clinically significant improvements in function of patients who receive cervical facet joint nerve block with or without Sarapin and Depo-Medrol (Group II) compared to patients randomized to Group I who receive only local anesthetic blocks. 3. To determine the adverse event profile in both groups.

Study to Demonstrate That Muscle Pattern Recognition (MPR) is an Effective Evaluation Tool for Musculoskeletal Neck or Back Pain

The investigators hypothesize that non able-bodied participants with reported acute, sub-acute, or chronic symptoms of neck or back pain of a musculoskeletal origin will have magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), X-ray and blood parameters that do not demonstrate a statistical difference between “normal” (able-bodied) volunteers. Muscle pattern recognition (MPR) testing will show statistically different results between these groups. This statistically significant finding in MPR results will enhance a clinician’s determination of clinical normality or abnormality. If this hypothesis is demonstrated, the MPR modality will be the first quantitative tool developed for assisting in the diagnosis of the presence or absence of a musculoskeletal dysfunction in a patient population. The availability of such an evaluation tool to a healthcare provider for patients with soft tissue, non-surgical neck or back complaints will substantially improve the accuracy of diagnosis and case management decisions.

Comparison of the Effectiveness of Mobilization and Manipulation of the Thoracic Spine in Patients With Mechanical Neck Pain

This study aims to compare whether or not there is a difference in the effectiveness of upper back (thoracic spine) mobilizations versus manipulations used in a population of patients with mechanical neck pain. The investigators hypothesize that patients receiving a manipulative technique will experience better outcomes than patients receiving the mobilization techniques and these results will be evident at a 48-hour follow-up.
