Filter by:Objectives: (1) To examine the upper trapezius muscle stiffness using SSI in workers with and without neck/shoulder disorders; and (2) to develop a workplace-based exercise programme to reduce upper trapezius muscle stiffness and to enhance shoulder function and work ability in the working population. Hypotheses to be tested: (1) Workers with neck/shoulder disorders demonstrate increase upper trapezius muscle stiffness when compared to healthy control; and a cutoff value of the upper trapezius stiffness was established for early identification of individuals at risk of having neck/shoulder disorders in the working population; (2) Workplace-based exercise programme can reduce upper trapezius muscle stiffness and enhance shoulder function and work ability in the working population. Design: Part A study: Cross-sectional study; Part B study: randomized controlled trial Subjects: One-hundred office computer workers with or without neck/shoulder pain Study instruments: Supersonic shear wave imaging Main outcome measures: Upper trapezius muscle stiffness, Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI), Neck Disability Index, Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH), work ability index (WAI). Data analysis: Between-group comparisons to show differences in the outcome measures will be analyzed using Independent t-test. To compare the treatment effects, repeated-measures analysis of variance test (between-group factor: intervention vs control; within-subject factor: time (baseline, 6 week and 1 year)). Expected results: Workers with neck/shoulder disorders demonstrate increase upper trapezius muscle stiffness when compared to healthy control. Workplace-based exercise programme can reduce upper trapezius muscle stiffness and enhance shoulder function and work ability in the working population.
PURPOSE: To translate, validate and examine the psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the COMI in Egyptian patients with neck pain. BACKGROUND: Neck pain is a highly prevalent musculoskeletal disorders in adults affecting from 45.5% to 48%. It may cause disability that interferes with the quality of life. It is usually treated conservatively. To evaluate treatment effectiveness, patients need close monitoring and follow-up. Different assessment tools are recommended including patient reported outcome measures. One of the newly introduced outcome measure is The Neck Core Outcome Measure Index (COMI). It is characterized by being brief, simple, self-reported and easy to answer questionnaire. The SPINE TANGO, which is the spine organization In Europe, has recommended its use for all patients with spine disorders. This questionnaire has been translated into different languages such as German, Polish and Italian but it has never been translated and validated in the Arabic language. HYPOTHESES 1. The Arabic version of neck-COMI will be a valid tool for the assessment of neck pain in Egyptian patients. 2. The Arabic version of neck-COMI will be a reliable tool for the assessment of neck pain in Egyptian patients. RESEARCH QUESTION: Will the Arabic version of neck-COMI be a valid and reliable tool to assess neck pain in the Egyptian patients?
Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of two different home exercise methods on exercise compliance, neck pain and neck disability in individuals with neck pain. Material and metods: The study, carried out between February 2018 and May 2018 at Istanbul Arel University Vocational School, was performed with 60 people aged 25-60 years who were suffering from neck pain in academic and administrative staff. The cases were randomly divided into two groups. In Group 1, the case was given home exercise method (B.M.E.Y) with printed materials whereas Group 2 was given exercise with home exercise method (V.H.E.Y) with video phone reminder. Pain intensity was evaluated before and after exercise with 'Visual Analog Scale' (VAS), whereas the level of neck disability was evaluated before and after exercise with 'Neck Pain and Disability Score' (NPDS). The obtained results were analyzed using appropriate statistical methods.
Musculoskeletal pain can affect up to 40% of children and adolescents. Neck pain (NP) is one of the most prevalent painful conditions and evidence suggests that its prevalence has increased in recent decades in adolescents aged 16 to 18 years, from 22.9% in 1991 to 29.5% in 2011. Interventions based on pain neuroscience education have emerged as promising strategies in chronic pain conditions.In adults this intervention has been explored in many pain conditions, including musculoskeletal pain, but there is only one pilot study in adolescents with chronic NP and one case study in adolescents with fibromyalgia. Thus, the main objective of the present study is: (i) To compare the effectiveness of an education program based on pain neuroscience education and exercise versus exercise alone, in decreasing pain intensity in secondary school students with chronic and idiopathic NP immediately after the intervention and at 6 months. The secondary objectives are to: i) Compare the effectiveness of these programs immediately after the intervention and at 6 months in i) disability, ii) sleep, iii) pain catastrophizing, iv) fear of movement, v) self-efficacy, vi) central sensitization vii) the strength of the deep neck flexors and extensors muscles and stabilizers of the scapula; and viii) the pressure pain threshold between the two intervention groups; ii) Explore possible predictors of response to treatment.
Different studies have revealed different success rates and patient satisfaction after cervical facet C-RF. In a study on 32 patients, with 15 months follow up, 25% had complete pain relief (8). Another study had shown mean pain relief of 12.5 months and 11.5 months following a repeat procedure, with an effectiveness of 95% in 47 patients (8). In one study a success rate of 88% after first RF, and 86% following a repeat RF in 49 patients with facet mediated cervicogenic headache. They regarded the absence of anesthesia in the distribution of the 3rd occipital nerve, a technical failure (9). In a study from New Zealand, demonstrated cervical facet RF as the sole treatment modality, produced 61% -74% complete pain relief with a median duration of 15-17 months in patients who had responded to facet joints diagnostic block (10). One more study in 2012 has demonstrated high voltage P-RF had a higher short-term effect compare to usual voltage, but results are still lower than C-RF (11). A double blind randomized prospective study has illustrated P-RF did not show any success rate in 6 months pain control, whereas C-RF had 95% pain control for trigeminal neuralgia (12). Cohen in a recent study has compared P-RF with steroid injection for occipital neuralgia or migraine with occipital nerve tenderness (13). Six weeks pain relief was 61% in P-RF group, and 36% in steroid injection group, with a positive outcome of 34%, and 26% respectively (13). One study on 2010 had reached to 52.6%, 6 months pain improvement on occipital neuralgia (14).
Background The mechanisms behind non-specific neck pain (NS-NP) have not yet been fully clarified. The anatomic relation between the tongue and structures that attach to the cervical spine suggests a possible clinical relation with a NS-NP. This study protocol describes a randomized, double-blind, clinical trial, the aim of which is to determine the influence of the release of the tongue muscles on pain intensity, cervical range of motion and neck function in individuals with NS-NP. Methods/Design Forty patients with NS-NP will be enrolled in a randomized, double-blind, clinical trial. The participants will be randomly allocated to two groups of 20 patients each. The experimental group (EG) will be submitted to a clinical method considered the gold standard for the treatment of neck pain together with a tongue muscle release protocol. The control group (CG) will only receive the gold standard method for the treatment of neck pain. All patients will receive six sessions of treatment at a frequency of twice per week and will be evaluated before and one week after the end of treatment. The primary outcome will be pain intensity measured using a numerical pain rating scale (range: 0 [no pain] to 10 [maximum pain]). The secondary outcomes will be the Pain Catastrophizing Scale, Patient-Specific Functional Scale, Neck Disability Index and cervical range of motion. Comparisons between groups before and after treatment will demonstrate whether the tongue muscle release technique exerts an effect on pain intensity, cervical range of motion and neck function in individuals with NS-NP. Discussion The purpose of this randomized clinical trial is to evaluate the effect of a tongue muscle release technique on pain intensity, cervical range of motion and neck function in patients with NS-NP. The data will be published after the study is completed. The study will support the practice of evidence-based physical therapy for individuals with nonspecific neck pain.

Cervical spondylosis is a chronic degenerative condition, commonly affecting >40-year-old adults worldwide. Cervical spondylosis is an important cause of neck pain and low back pain, and seriously affects the physical health, mental health, patients quality of life. Yoga has been most commonly used intervention for pain conditions. But its efficacy in cervical spondylosis has not yet been studied in clinical trials. The primary aim of the present study was to assess the efficacy of yoga chikitsa (therapy) compared with control intervention for neck pain caused by cervical spondylosis.
Chronic nonspecific neck pain (CNNP) is a public health issues with a 50% life prevalence. CNNP is a leading cause of disability which contributes to higher costs due to loss of productivity, disability, and increased absenteeism from work. Yoga has been found effective managing neck pain but there has been no study at work setting for chronic non-specific neck pain. To determine the effectiveness of Yoga@work program for chronic non specific neck pain among office workers, present randomised controlled trial was undertaken.
The Neurophysiology of Pain Questionnaire was first developed in English to test whether healthcare staff and patients could exactly understand pain neurophysiology. This questionnaire which contains 19 items was developed from the exam questions of students interested in post-graduate pain medicine. Catley et al. (2013) investigated the psychometric properties of the modified Neurophysiology of Pain Questionnaire with a few word differences from the original version by conducting a rash analysis on 300 patients with chronic spinal pain. Acceptable internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the questionnaire were recorded. However, it was stated that 7 items negatively affect psychometric properties of the questionnaire. As a result, the author concluded that the questionnaire had sufficient psychometric properties for use in chronic spinal pain subjects, but further studies were needed. The Neurophysiology of Pain Questionnaire was used to measure a knowledge about pain in different studies. The validity and reliability studies of the Dutch, French and Brazlian Portuguese versions of the Neurophysiology of Pain Questionnaire were conducted in the literature. The aim of our study was to translate the Revised Neurophysiology of Pain Questionnaire into Turkish language and to investigate its psychometric properties.
