Radiofrequency in Anal Incontinence: Randomized Clinical Trials

Anal incontinence (AI) is used to englobe the involuntary loss of both fecal material and gases, which can help to improve quality of life. Based on these experiences objectives were drawn: to evaluate the effectiveness of radiofrequency and it's influence on quality of life of patients with anal incontinence, to correlate the anal incontinence severity and to evaluate a sexual function and to verify an influence with radiofrequency treatment. It is a blind randomized clinical trial. For the collection of data it was used a fecal quality of life questionnaire (FIQL). The questionnaire assess the severity of Anal Incontinence (FISI), the degree of patient's satisfaction using a five-point scale (Likert) and a visual analogue EVA scale). It was divided in two groups, in one group it was used radiofrequency and pelvic exercises and in the other turned off radiofrequency (heated glycerin) and pelvic exercises. It was accomplished in eight sections. As a result, it is expected the efficiency of the treatment of radiofrequency in the quality of life, in sexual function and in it's severity.

Community-Based Continence Promotion: Sustaining Healthy Aging in Place (SHAIP) Through Mind Over Matter (MOM)

The goal of this study is to obtain data about the effectiveness, reach, adoption, and implementation potential of an innovative, combined urinary/bowel continence workshop through a randomized controlled trial in six Wisconsin communities. This three-session workshop is based on proven principles of behavior change addressing urinary and bowel continence self-management and health education and has been developed specifically for administration to women age 50 and older in senior centers. We hypothesize that workshop participants will experience improvements in urinary and bowel incontinence symptoms, will have increased levels of care-seeking and self-efficacy for these conditions, and will maintain the self-management strategies taught in the workshop 3 months following completion of the workshop. We further hypothesize that this workshop will reach its intended target population (independent senior women with incontinence) and will improve their mental health by destigmatizing the condition of incontinence.

Does Single Dose Imipramine Affect the Opening Pressure of the Urethral and Anal Sphincter?

A double-blinded, randomized, crossover study in healthy females with placebo and single dose imipramine 50 mg. Primary objective: Does imipramine increase the tone of the external urethral sphincter? Urethral Opening Pressure (UOP) is measured with Urethral Pressure Reflectometry (UPR). UOP increases correlate with effect in treating stress urinary incontinence. Can imipramine treat stress urinary incontinence? Secondary objective: Does imipramine increase the tone of the anal sphincter? The opening pressure is measured with Anal Acoustic Reflectometry (AAR). The investigators also wish to establish the within-subject standard deviation for AAR to enable power calculations in future studies.

Treatment of Incontinence Associated Dermatitis - Automated

Incontinence and the skin irritation (dermatitis) associated with it are common problems. Treatment of dermatitis is effective, but requires effective cleaning and application of a barrier substance to prevent further contact between urine or feces and the skin. Water based cleansing with the addition of a pH balanced cleanser is more effective than standard abrasive cleansing with paper or a cloth, and is better tolerated by those with skin irritation. Zinc oxide based barriers effectively promote healing and prevent further skin damage. Spray forms are less cumbersome and generally preferred, but are difficult to for the patient to apply independently given the challenge of accessing the perineum. 40 patients, recruited from 3 specialty pelvic floor centers and 1 assisted living center will be provided a device that cleans, dries, and applies zinc oxide barrier spray with each use of the toilet. Dermatitis will be evaluated at the beginning of the study, and at weeks 1, 2 and 6 by medical staff using a standard scale (The Kennedy Scale).Quality of life will be measured using a visual analog scale derived from the quality of life in incontinence scale. The investigators hypothesize that the device will 1) effectively treat incontinence associated dermatitis, 2) prevent recurrence, and 3) be preferred over standard treatment.

Risk Factors for Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis (IAD) in ICU Patients Suffering From Fecal Incontinence

This study aims to identify patient characteristics associated with the development of Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis (IAD) category 2 (skin erosion due to incontinence). 380 ICU patients suffering of fecal incontinence will be included in the study. Data on 19 possible risk factors will be collected at one point in time by the research team. Different sources and methods will be used to collect patient data: skin assessment, patient record, direct patient observation, routine blood samples.
