Mirror Therapy on PC in Acute Bell's Palsy.

The objective of this study is to compare the effects of mime therapy using mirror therapy application of tablet PC vs mime therapy on acute bell's palsy. Study Design was Randomized control trial with Sample Size was 22. Sampling Technique was Purposive sampling. Randomization was done through a sealed envelope method. Study Setting included Physiotherapy department of DHQ Teaching Hospital, Mirpur Azad Kashmir. Inclusion criteria were Age between 30-60year, Both male & female and Acute bell's palsy ( 2-3 weeks). Exclusion criteria were Individuals with the other neurological deficits, Visual impairment, History of facial palsy of central type, Surgical intervention for ear and facial nerve palsy and Non-co-operative patients. tools used for assessment was Sunnybrook Facial Grading system scale, House-Brackmann Facial Grading System and Patients Global Impression of Change. Individuals who met the inclusion criteria were included in this study. All participants went through randomization and divided into two groups Experimental group 1 (these individuals will receive mime therapy using tablet PC mirror application)and Experimental group 2 (these individuals will receive the control intervention including the mime therapy). Pre-intervention assessment is made for both groups. Then intervention will apply to both groups. Estimated time of treatment protocol will be 30 minutes session, 4 times/week for 4 weeks in the hospital setting. Subjects will be evaluated at baseline, then 2nd week and 4th-week assessment will be the final. All statistical analyses were performed through SPSS 21. Normality of data was assessed and after checking normality parametric or non-parametric test was applied accordingly. .

Kabat Technique and Neuromuscular Effect in Patients With Bell's Palsy

Bell's palsy is the sudden one-sided peripheral weakness of seventh cranial nerve (Facial nerve), represents 50% to 75% of all etiologies with a rate of 58.2 to 8 new cases per 1 million per year. The objective is to compare the effects of Kabat techniques and Neuromuscular Re-Education on facial disability and synkinesis in patients with bell's palsy. A Randomized Control Trial was conducted on 20 participants, equally allocated in Kabat and PNF training group from February-2020 until December- 2020. Participants were selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria on purposive sampling technique and randomization was done by sealed envelope method. The assessment was done after taking consent before the first and last session. The tools included Facial disability index, Sunnybrook facial grading system and synkinesis assessment questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS v.20.

Therapeutic ultrasound (US) is among the commonly used physical modalities for treating musculoskeletal disorders. The effects of US are due to alteration of cell membrane activity, vascular wall permeability and facilitation of tissue healing. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of pulsed US treatment in patients with Bell's palsy when added to superficial heating, massage and exercise therapies.

Artificial eye blinking stimulation following damage to the facial nerve. Group 1 - Patients with a persistent unilateral facial paralysis (palsy) that underwent an operation for facial reanimation Group 2 - Patients with temporary unilateral facial paralysis, secondary to unilateral Bell's palsy. Primary objective: To evaluate whether the Neurotigger device can elicit a complete or a partial eyelid closure of the affected eye. Secondary objective: To optimize the location of the Neurotrigger's electrodes, and define the level of the pain generated, if any, during device implementation and stimulation, as well as the method for the personal adjustment of the precise pattern of stimulation (strength, intensity, other features) to achieve eye blinking for different patients.

Mixed Methods Investigation of Chronic Facial Paralysis in Individuals With Synkinesis

This proposal will prospectively assess the social, physical, and emotional recognition function in participants with synkinesis. It will measure the effectiveness of neuromuscular retraining therapy to improve muscle coordination compared to chemodenervation, the more established treatment modality, in a single-blinded, randomized control trial using clinician- and patient-reported outcomes measures. The hypothesis tested is that participants undergoing neuromuscular retraining therapy will achieve greater improvement on clinical outcome measures as compared to participants receiving chemodenervation. In this clinical trial, 36 participants undergoing treatment for synkinesis will be enrolled into one of two treatment arms: chemodenervation or neuromuscular retraining therapy. Participants can expect to be on study for approximately 8 months. Participants who enroll in this mixed methods investigation will be recruited from patients of the University of Wisconsin Facial Nerve Clinic and also be enrolled in a another study for assessment [Perception of Emotion Expression in Clinical Populations with Facial Paralysis, IRB approval 2015-0366].

Function and Form Outcomes in Patients With Facial Paralysis

This study will be unique for the rehabilitation of patients with facial paralysis in that the focus is to generate novel 3D facial soft tissue measures to characterize the condition and temporal changes, and on the generation of future testable hypotheses to optimize surgical interventions and outcomes. In addition, the investigators will extend our previous work, beyond the facial circumoral and lip areas/zones, to characterize additional facial zones specific for facial paralysis. The approach for facial mapping of soft tissue movement, when validated through this proposed study, can be used for both surgical planning and to support the development and training of implantable facial pacing devices. Mapping both normal facial movements and movements of patients with unilateral facial paralysis are vital to describe the temporal and spatial course of the recovery process. Ultimately, this information can be used to inform clinicians on the precise placement of these devices and the signal strength needed to facilitate movements in the required 'paralyzed' facial zones until the recovery process has been completed.
