NCT ID: NCT02486458 Completed - Dental Caries Clinical Trials

Long-term Release of Fluoride Formed on Enamel by Fluoride Gel or Varnish to Biofilm Fluid

Start date: April 2015
Phase: Early Phase 1
Study type: Interventional

The anticaries effect of professional fluoride application has been associated with the formation of calcium fluoride-like products ("CaF2") on dental surface, which may function as a slow release fluoride reservoir. Among professional fluoride products, fluoride gel and varnish are the most important, and have different soluble fluoride concentrations, pHs and vehicles. Although the concentration of fluoride formed on enamel after the use of both is similar, the retention of these reaction products is unknown. Also, it is unknown the capacity of these reservoirs to enhance dental biofilm fluid with fluoride. Moreover, the effect of the varnish application time on these parameters is unknown. Therefore, the aim of this study is to compare the capacity of fluoride gel and varnish to form fluoride reservoirs on enamel and increase dental biofilm fluid fluoride concentration with time. Rapid biofilm-forming individuals will be selected to participate and divided into 4 experimental groups: 1. Negative control: no treatment; 2. Varnish 4 hours: fluoride varnish will be applied and kept on teeth for 4 hours; 3. Varnish 24 h: fluoride varnish will be applied on teeth and kept for 24 h; and 4. Gel: Fluoride gel will be applied on teeth. Microbiopsies of enamel will be obtained by a microbiospy technique to assess fluoride concentration before, 7 and 28 days after the treatments. Dental biofilm will be collected before and 3, 7, 14 and 28 days after treatments. Fluoride concentration on enamel and in the biofilm fluid will be determined by an ion-specific electrode. Data will be analyzed statistically comparing the groups and collection times.

NCT ID: NCT02479958 Completed - Dental Caries Clinical Trials

An in Vitro Evaluation of Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy on Deciduous Carious Dentin

Start date: May 2011
Phase: Phase 1
Study type: Interventional

Despite of the decline of dental caries, this disease is still common in polarized groups affecting children. Therefore, the aim of this randomized blind in vivo study was to compare the antimicrobial effect of two antimicrobial therapies in deciduous carious dentin. Thirty two patients aging from 5 to 7 years old had partial caries removal in deep carious dentin lesion in deciduous molar and were divided in three groups: 1. Control - chlorhexidine and resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC); 2. LEDTB - antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (APDT) with LED (light emission diode) associated with toluidine blue orto dye solution and RMGIC; 3. LMB - APDT with laser associated with methylene blue dye solution and RMGIC. The patients were submitted to initial clinical and radiographic examination and demographic features were evaluated by biofilm, gingival, and dmft/dmfs indexes, besides clinical and radiographic follow up at 6 and 12 months after the treatments. The carious dentin was collected before and after each treatment and the number of Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus, Lactobacillus casei, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Atopobium rimae and total bacteria were established by quantitative PCR.

NCT ID: NCT02473107 Completed - Dental Caries Clinical Trials

Impact of Detecting Initial and Active Caries Lesions in Primary Teeth

Start date: September 2015
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The present study aims to evaluate the impact of detecting active initial caries lesions in primary teeth regarding effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, applicability (acceptability and satisfaction) and quality of life. For this, 248 children 3-6 years with complete primary dentition will be examined and treated in a mobile dental unit, which will temporarily be parked in public schools of Sao Paulo. The caries detection will be conducted using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) and, depending on allocation, an adjunct criterion for caries activity assessment. Children will be randomized in two groups according to the caries threshold to be detected: Group A (only advanced lesions will be detected and treated, independently of their activity status) and Group B (all caries lesions, including initial ones, will be detected and all active lesions will be treated). After this, the treatment plan for each child will be made according to strategies mentioned above. Data concerning the cost-effectiveness of the procedures, acceptability / satisfaction of children and quality of life will be collected after diagnosis, after the end of treatment and 12 and 24 months from the initial examination. For comparison between groups, multilevel regression analyses will be performed. The primary outcome will be sites which need of operative treatment during the follow-up periods and the secondary outcomes will be the cost-effectiveness of each strategy, the acceptability / satisfaction of the child and the impact on quality of life.

Caries Prevention Effect of S-PRG Filler Incorporated in Denture Base Resins on Edentulous Elderly People

Start date: June 2015
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The purpose of this study is to determine whether a novel material of S-PRG fillers containing in a daily-used resin denture base and their capability of fluoride release and recharge to elevate the salivary fluoride level and prevent dental caries in Thai middle-aged patients between 35-60 years of age who wear the resin denture.

NCT ID: NCT02459730 Completed - Dental Caries Clinical Trials

Glass-ionomer Cement Containing Chlorhexidine for ART

Start date: February 2013
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

This study evaluated the clinical and microbiological long-term effects of 1.25% CHX associated with GIC applied in primary molars using Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) technique. Randomized controlled trial was conducted on 40 children with carious lesions that received ART either with GIC containing CHX or GIC only. Survival rate of restorations was checked at 3 days, 3 months and 1 year after their placement when the unstimulated saliva samples were collected for microbiological assessment of mutans streptococci (MS) counts. Data were analyzed using ANOVA/Tukey or Kruskal-Wallis/Mann-Whitney tests (p <0.05).

Impact of Dental Pain on the Quality of Life

Start date: January 2013
Phase: N/A
Study type: Observational [Patient Registry]

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the perceived impact of dental caries and dental pain on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among preschool children and their families. A cross-sectional study was conduct with 843 preschool children in Campina Grande, Brazil. Parents/caregivers answered a questionnaire on socio-demographic information, their child's general/oral health and history of dental pain. The Brazilian version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale was administered to determine the perceived impact of caries and dental pain on OHRQoL. Children have undergone an oral examination. Logistic regression for complex sample was used to determine associations between the dependent and independent variables (OR: odds ratio; α = 5%).

Checking Occlusion During Stainless Steel Crown Placement

Start date: August 2013
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Stainless steel crowns are arguably the most successful posterior restorations in primary teeth and have been so for more than 50 years. Stainless steel crowns offer durability and success rates in excess of 95% making them the restoration of choice for posterior primary teeth in children treated under general anesthesia. Failures of stainless steel crowns placed on primary teeth have been documented using several criteria including marginal adaptation, recurrent caries, abscess formation or root resorption, loss of the crown due to faulty retention and even perforation of the crown . Despite the probability that factors such as root resorption and failure of endodontic treatment could be due to traumatic occlusion, surprisingly little evidence is available in literature on the attempts made to check or evaluate the occlusion of stainless steel crowns placed under general anesthesia The aim of this study was to compare the time taken for placement and the overall success of bilateral multiple stainless crowns placed under general anesthesia using an occlusal index and compare them to crowns placed without such an index, using a randomized control study design
