The Tayside Brushing Study - Adult Follow up

Historically dental health of Scottish children had been poor for many years. Evidence form clinical trials of fluoride toothpaste identified a route to improving prevention. Those who had poor dental health used fluoride toothpaste infrequently at home. The investigators hypothesised that this disadvantage could be overcome by supplying toothpaste to disadvantaged families and supervising child toothbrushing at school. In 1997, 534 children 5.3 years were recruited in 12 primary schools in Tayside; randomly assigned to one of two groups - test group followed a home-to-school toothbrushing programme with fluoride toothpaste; control group: usual care. Children in test group were provided with toothbrushes and toothpaste (1,000ppmF as sodium monofluorophosphate) for home use; also brushed their teeth school daily. After 2 years, children participating in the supervised brushing programme developed significantly less caries (tooth decay). Permission was given for longitudinal follow up of children and dental records. The original intervention lasted 30 months and children were re-examined at 36 months after baseline, 48, 60 and 84 months. At 84 month examination, 77% were available, found prolonged benefits of brushing programme. This was 4.5 years after the end of the programme; children were aged 11.5 years. At age 14 years, 6.5 years after intervention end, 65% of children were reexamined; benefit was still evident at 20-26% less caries experience. However, there had been greater subject loss and insufficient funds available to undertake a more individual followup of participants. Since then, records have been followed; up-to-date contact details identified. Using this new data, the investigators seek to reconsent the participants, now aged 23 to invite them to attend a followup dental examination. This study has the potential to provide unique information on longterm costs and benefits of a home-to-school toothbrushing programme.

6-year Clinical Evaluation of Glass Ionomer Cements (GIS) With Resin Coating on Posterior Teeth

The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term clinical performance of two highly viscous encapsulated GICs (EquiaFil and Riva SC) covered with two different coatings (Equia Coat and Fuji Varnish) over 6-year using modified United State Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. A total of 256 restorations were made with EquiaFil and Riva SC. Equia Coat or Fuji Varnish was used randomly on the surface of the restorations. The restorations were evaluated at baseline, 6, 12, 18 months and 6 years after placement using modified USPHS criteria. The results were evaluated with Pearson Chi-Square and Mann Whitney U-test (p< 0.05).

This study concerns the prevention of dental caries by sealing pits and fissures of permanent molars with a photopolymerizable resin. It must compare these three techniques Microdentisty (air abrasion, abrasion and sound using small cutters) usually used to prepare micro cavities in the enamel and / or the outer third of the dentin. These three commonly used techniques have never been compared by retaining as endpoint retention of sealant. These techniques are painless and do not require local anesthesia.

Prevention of Dental Caries Lesions With Fluoride Varnish in Erupting First Permanent Molars

Silver Diamine Fluoride Pilot Study (SDF)

This pilot trial is randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled trial with two parallel arms: an intervention group using silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and a placebo group (control). 60 eligible healthy adults will be enrolled in the study and randomly assigned to one of the two treatment groups. Both groups will receive the traditional preventive measures including cleanings, Fluoride varnish, diet analysis and counseling. Study participants will be followed for one year and caries progression will be radiographically monitored.

Preventive Effect of Salt Fluoridation

This was a block-randomized, controlled, open-label trial and was executed in two preschools in The Gambia. Fluoridated table salt (250 mg F/kg salt) was administered in daily communal preschool feeding. In total, 304 children in the test group and 137 children in the control group, aged 3 to 5 years were enrolled according to inclusion criteria (complete primary dentition and a parental or legal guardian informed consent). Mean difference of incidence of cavitated carious lesions (Δd3/4mft) after 12 months was the primary end point. The relative preventive dental caries effect was. Secondary end points were the difference of incidence of white spot lesions and the difference of incidence of total carious lesions.

Sealing Manifest Occlusal Caries Lesions in the Permanent Dentition

The research project "SEAL-DK" is focusing on advantages and disadvantages of two treatment strategies: non-invasive fissure sealing and invasive restorative treatment of manifest occlusal caries lesions in permanent teeth in children and adolescents. The purpose of the project is to promote the understanding of the possibilities of non-invasive treatment of occlusal caries lesions in the permanent dentition, and to increase the present knowledge about the optimal threshold for sealing or restoration, respectively, when treating such lesions. The project is carried out as a randomized study of the two treatment strategies: non-invasive versus invasive treatment of occlusal caries. When organizing the study, it is emphasized that no treatment shall be carried out, if conflicting the participating dentists' perception of clinically proper caries treatment, and that the results shall have a high reliability and consistency. The hypothesis is that caries progression can be stopped by non-invasive fissure sealing changing the threshold and postponing the time for invasive restoration.
